we sat back a lot that period. It just didnt translate into many chances. But it did lead to the one breakaway and goal in the game. Without Nick, I can see us going even more defensive. Our chances of winning run and gun diminished, at least for now.

when has dale put the caps in run and gun mode? didnt he say he didnt believe in run and gun?

the caps are a trap team that forechecks when they get numbers. they almost always get outshot...dont they?

Nicky really is the QB of this team. So obvious when he's out of the lineup. No one can hold on to the puck like he does. I figured Ovi-MJ-Semin could open things up, but they haven't shown anything yet. Their last shift was decent though. Hope they can carry the momentum into the 2nd here.

You haven't seen us in attack mode at all in his 15+ games? Even Laich said he switches it up mid games. If we were always in a 122, every period of every game would look just like tonights, nary a scoring chance.

attack mode and run and gun are two different things. dale has said he doesnt play run and gun hockey. this team will transition when the trap turns the puck over and will forecheck when they get numbers in their favor. otherwise they trap even when behind. i am not commenting on the validity of that. thats his philosophy.

watch teh wings down below the face off circles in the defense zone. you dont run and gun like that. you cant

Pittsburgh is attacking the neutral zone the same every single time. They have a guy sitting along the right-side boards on the blueline and they feed it to him on a stretch pass. It was working for a while, but it's getting predictable and the Caps are bottling it up better now.

I've seen some other teams do this against us, too. Wonder if something we're doing is opening that up through the neutral zone.

+1. It has debated a lot over the years, the centers are the true heart and soul of the team. Always build teams down the middle theory. We have been lucky thus far that he had been very durable early in his career. Its going to take some time to deal with him out of lineup.

Brouwer said it recently, he has been our MVP this year. We are built around our big guns. One goes down, we are in adjustment mode. We learned to score without Ovi, secondary scoring, we started winning without Green, trapping and getting transitions by team play, not just him.

We havent found the formula to win without Nick yet.

Then he becomes Kovalchuk, the guy on the team with the most SHG and SHG against.

Kundratek hasn't really done...anything. Which isn't surprising for first game.

Has had his minutes limited a lot so far. We've seen 44 out there with 6 and 81 on some shifts instead of 36. But Kundratek has been pretty good for his first game. Still needs size and improved coverage in the defensive zone, but has done a solid job moving the puck up ice and knowing when to jump up tonight.
