Mason Raymond

With Gillis stating the Canucks are open for business many posters feel that Raymond might be on the block.

Easy question, what's he worth?

A young top 4 d-man with solid upside.

I would consider a package deal for him.

We would need a 3rd liner, a decent d-man coming back (#4-6 guy) and a solid 4th liner.

Carolina
Mason Raymond
2nd Round Pick
Alex Sulzer
Victor Oreskovich

Vancouver
Tim Gleason
Chad Larose
Patrick Dwyer

I know its 3 roster players from Carolina, but they get a young top 6 forward, as well as a 2nd rounder for the upcoming draft. Sulzer is a warm body/contract to send to Carolina.

This is almost exactly what I was going to post except I had VAN sending a 3rd instead of a 2nd and Dwyer wasn't involved.

This costs Raymond but upgrades the D in a big way with some defensive grit. Larose takes Raymond's spot on the third to help offset some of the lost offense. Van gives up a pick to pay for Larose since I don't think the difference between RFA Raymond and UFA Gleason quite covers Larose.

I know we would be stealing 3 roster players, but I would really like to see Dwyer come this way in the trade. Things Vancouver needs is a 4th line winger and another top 4 d-man (3rd liner if we trade Raymond).
We need a guy to play a shutdown role on the 4th line and log difficult minutes against tough competition and Dwyer would be that guy to complete the roster.

Sedin Sedin Burrows
Booth Kesler Higgins
Hansen Hodgson Larose <-- Hansen + Larose are similar
Lapierre Manny Dwyer <-- Very effective shutdown line.
/Weise

Hamhuis Bieksa
Edler Salo
Ballard Gleason
Rome/Alberts/Tanev

I don't think JR is going to trade LaRose. Management loves little Rosey.. Maybe replace him with Ponikarovsky in this deal?

Coach V is a pretty big Raymond fan. Im not a fan of Poni and it would have to be Larose coming back for us to do this.

No interest in Poni from me. Though I'm not a huge fan of him in the first place...

I should ask though. How is he playing? And how would you grade his hitting/physicality/willingness for body contact? According to NHL.com, he has more hits than Gleason, but I don't remember Poni being a physical player at all considering his size.

I'm game. I know a lot of people think LaRose will never move but I have a feeling some people are tired of him. Not that he is a bad player, I think people are sick of seeing him on the first and second line.

I wouldn't say he's been a wrecking ball, but he's been more physical than I suspected from him. His best upside shows when he is parked right in front of the goalie.

Honestly, Raymond wont be dealt for a deal based around an expiring contract(Gleason) & a borderline NHL(Dwyer).

That may be true, but he's a wonderful 3rd liner. It's not LaRose's fault the team plays him in a less than ideal position.

You're right he is. I'm just saying he might not be the fan favorite he used to be just because the casual fan will see him on the 1st/2nd line and get frustrated he isn't putting up 1st/2nd line points. The main thing that has kept him here so long is his defensive ability and that he is a fan favorite.

Oh yea, I'm not arguing with you. I can definitely see what you're saying.

I think for a contending team, LaRose would be a sought after commodity to play on the 3rd line. If he's played where he's supposed to be in a lineup, then he's pretty valuable, in my eyes.

I like Larose but the Canucks would be looking for someone with more size.

I know that Gleason is a UFA at seasons end, but we still get Larose as well as Dwyer signed on for next year.

Maybe we could make the 2nd a conditional, and it becomes a 3rd if Gleason doesn't resign.

I know he may not be big, but he does add a physical element that Raymond doesn't. We also gain size on the blue line in Gleason.

Sedin Sedin Burrows
Booth Kesler Higgins
Hansen Hodgson Larose
Lappy Malhotra Dwyer

Hamhuis Bieksa
Edler Salo
Ballard Gleason

Hard to deny that isn't an improved lineup.

I know Gleason is a UFA, but Larose and Dwyer are both in for another year after this.

I also suggested making the 2nd round pick a Conditional
*Condition being either Gleason resigns or Van makes it to SCF
If not it becomes a 3rd

I'm unfamiliar with Dwyer but I just figured that the Canucks would look for another trade or two to add a 4th liner. I don't think they need to fill all their holes with one deal and a 4th liner can easily be found in a one for one type of move. That way MG gets more of a choice to find the best 4th line fit.

And towards the comment about size, Larose is more physical than Raymond who he is replacing. I agree the team probably wants a bit more oomph but that is what Gleason would be for. He is a 20 minute physical defenseman for the last 4 years. He is something we don't have right now.
