I guess that was done when Staal was still out so they didn't count him...

A top 6 of:

Staal - Girardi
Mcd - Sauer
MDZ - Eminger/Stralman

is easily top 5 in the league, maybe top 3. The fact that we would have MDZ on a bottom pair saids it all.

Staal and now Girardi the way he as been this season will be the best shutdown duo in the league when they are reunited, i have no doubt about that.

The only way these rankings make sense is if offense plays a large role; seeing how the rangers have top defensive dmen, but lack an offensive presence from the blueline that Chicago exemplifies.

How are the Rangers behind the Flyers, or does that take Pronger into account? Sharks, Sens, and Kings are all way too low, IMO.

Bold part is the key. Spend every last dollar on the forwards. My cap analysis tells me we should have 3 big time forwards while still being able to pay the Cally's, Dubi's and other secondary guys. Unfortunately we only have 1 primary guy right now, Brad Richards.

Did you forget about Gaborik somehow?

Kings should definitely be higher, in the top half of the league at the very least. Their defense is among the stingiest in the league.

Pretty stupid to just dismiss Gaborik considering he's leading the team in goals by a mile and then some. Not to mention he's been an overall beast this season.

HOW DARE YOU SIT THERE AND DISRESPECT THAT MAN LIKE THAT!!! HOW DARE YOU!

Leads the team in Goals (5 of which are game winners btw), Points, was selected to the All Star game and is currently 3rd in the league in goals.

Also last time I checked, he saved our bacon in the shootout a few nights ago.

He had ONE bad season last year, and you still want to crucify him.

He has a personal grudge against Gaborik.

We have 2 "big" forwards, Gaborik and Richards.

Maybe Parise next year.

Henrik Lundqvist.

8th is a bit high though. I'd say we're top 5 for sure.

While what you say is valid, I still have my doubts about gaboriks ability to be a factor in the playoffs when the games are tighter and more physical. The guy cannot take a hit to make a play. He gives up the puck whenever it looks like he might get some contact. Until he has a good playoff series for the Rangers, the jury is still out, IMO.

Not to mention the Rangers are 5th in blocked shots. Sure not just the D are blocking those shots but Girardi, MDZ, Sauer, and Eminger are 4 of the top 5 Rangers in blocked shots.

Top 5 in Defenseive play, but probably no better than middle of the pack when it comes to offense generated from the backline. Throw the two facets of the game together and I think 8 is about right.

We are easily top 5 and definitely better than Philly is now without Pronger.

See, thats completely fair, and I agree, I want to see him have a good playoff series for the Rangers as well.

But to dog him, and say he's not a good player, like MSG is the place to be does it ridiculous.

8th is too low.

We're definitely top 5, but not top 3 since Hank masks a lot of our weaknesses when we do break down.

8th doesn't seem so far off to me. As others have mentioned, the lack of offense generated by our blueline hurts us.

Also, it's hard to tell how much our goals against average is attributed to the defense or goaltending. I think Lundqvist and Biron are a big part of it. Rangers are ranked 12th in the league in shots against per game. Teams such as the Blues and the Canucks are superior to the Rangers in limiting shots against.

His first two playoff appearances, he totaled 12 goals and 21 points in 23 games. He's capable.

Might have been true in the past, but Gaborik's been instrumental in his lines cycle this year. He takes plenty of hits to make plays. He also initiates plenty of contact behind the goal line and uses his quick stick to keep possession of the puck on the forecheck.

He's been much better in those regards this year.
