NHL fighting down 25% this year

Fighting is down 25% in the NHL this season, even though the league has taken no steps to reduce it.

”I think there has been a shift in the way the game is being played,” said Phoenix Coyotes general manager Don Maloney. ”The rules are protecting players, where in the past, the players policed the game a little bit more.”

Last season, there were 697 fighting majors in the first half. This season, there were 519. Twenty-one of the 30 teams have had fewer fighting majors than they had at the midpoint last season. Seven are up.

”Even though very few fights end up in concussion, there is this feeling I have that people are more careful and leery,” Maloney said.

Last season, 252 players had at least one fight at the halfway point. There are 213 players this season.

League hasn't done anything to reduce it my ass. Linesman seperate everything but the "staged" fight. That, and 10s are giving out like candy on halloween because of the stupid instigator.

Well it looks like all the bleeding hearts are getting what they want, less physical play, less fighting which means more goals... Oh wait thats going down too

How many "fighting goons" remain nhl regulars? I know the canucks don't have one anymore, and I think other teams have dropped them as well.

I have no problem with fighting decreasing. The opposite, an increase in fighting, would just give the nhl a bad representation and increase the calls for fighting to be banned outright.

Well said sir, well said I'm so freaking sick of the greenpeace crowd screaming for *****fying the game, take out hitting and fighting they should just shut the **** up and find another game.

Fights are down yet concussion are at an alltime high, so are suspensions every two days yeah I guess banning fighting just all the wussy "fans" are happy ... will reduce injuries?
