Bob showed tonight that deflections and breakdowns on D and even penalty shots ARE INDEED STOPPABLE....
His fundamentals are strong right now. On the telecast they kept saying how hard Bob has been working in practice...they were kind of almost making jabs at Bryz IMO. Tocchet even referred to Bryz as "This guy" and obviously after the game everybody was singing Bob's praises....I have a feeling Bryz is feeling like Pluto or dark matter in the locker room right now..cold and desolate.
nobody stated otherwise. Bryz has made break-away saves in his last few games, too & bailed out the D several times.
but right now, Bob is looking better.
No didn't state it outright...implied it often enough. Lots of apologists but heck it was pervasive with Leighton too and I'm actually pulling for Bryz. I just don't blindly defend the indefensible....
As far as Bob looking better right now...I would say he's looked better since the preseason when Bryz was lookin like a geriatric then as well and I was trying to defend him by saying it's only preseason and he needs to warm up. Well we're half way into the season and he's about as warm as an El Camino in a junkyard. He played really well a couple of games ago but then was rather pedestrian the next game. I mean how long does it take for this guy to warm up...ugh. Just very frustrated that what was supposed to be a solution is another freaking question mark in a long line of them....
Again..I can give him a pass for the entire year (transition year) especially since we have Bob but not sure how prudent that is since a decision will need to be made when Bob's contract comes up which is after next year.
My issue is that you made Bryzgalov the #1 by giving him the money and years, yet you aren't treating him like a #1 at all. I understand Bob is the better goalie right now, but Bryz will come around. You can't start him 3 games, have him play decent, good and then okay and then pull him and play Bob against 2 of the worst teams in the league.. I thought Bryz was just starting to look better. Now Bob will get the start until he sucks, and he will suck...
We shall see, but I think you're going to see a different Bryzgalov in net for his next start. He's had to adjust, now he just needs the confidence again.
That being said, I don't think its healthy to have both of these goalies on the same team. Bob will have to be traded... which sucks but it's the truth.. after this year he could return a ton and there is no point keeping him. Unless that is Bryz completely goes off the deep end and were stuck with a 5.1 million backup... which is unrealistic
There is nothing I'd rather see than see Bob take this job and run with it the next 10-14 years. I've never wanted Bryz on this team and it seems to be looking like those wishes were true.
Going to suck being stuck with Bryz's contract for 9 years though.
You sign Bryzgalov as your #1, you play him as your #1. Otherwise trade him and start f'ing around!
They tried the "play him as you #1" thing. He's failed. He's got 28 of the 42 starts, and he doesn't have more because he's been downright terrible too often. He has been given every opportunity.

You dont just play a guy because he is paid big bucks. You play the person that is winning.
Say that you are an NHL coach. I tell you to pick a goalie to start. I tell you Goalie A stats are 3.07 GAA with a sv% of .891 and Goalie B's stats are 2.42 GAA with a .921 sv%.

Who would you start?
You do just starta goalie because he makes big bucks. The longer this goes on, the bigger the problem becomes. Bryz wasnt just a great goalie who is going to suck forever... let him get his confidence back now. For those arguing for bobrovsky, youre crazy... he was basically traded when we signed bryz. They will wait until he reaches his max value before his contract is up and he is gone. It sucks but its going to happen. Good luck trying to trade bryz.... see the problem? Start Bryz now and let him get better.
I see your point about as a coach you start the best goalie. I agree bob has been better, but as a coach you have to think of the future and bryz is it. We signed him, and thats that. Bryz will get back to his old ways.
You would be hard pressed to find a goalie who's numbers AREN'T better than bryz's right now. But, I am not yet convinced that bryz is really this bad.
I am just hoping that both Goalies can soldier on and stand on their collective heads whilst our D tries to get their shi$ together....Way too many turnovers, and as great as BOB played the last 2 games, we cannot expect that type performance every night, or that type luck also...We got lucky last night a few times, Islanders should of had a 4 minute PP one time for the high stick that drew blood etc....Having said that, we should ride the BOB train until he gives reason not to.
I never want to see him in a Flyers jersey again personally.
We might see him in the playoffs. He'll be recalled because he won't have to clear waivers and his cap hit won't count. If the Flyers end up playing like crap and Lavi goes into panic mode again, I fear we'll see him in orange and black.
Bob is just faster and has a better sense of where the puck is going. Bottom line. It doesn't matter if he makes $1m or $100m. Or if he is #1 or #2. Bob is a better goaltender. He will only get better with time until he is too old. Or if he gets hurt.

Ya he played against the Islanders, but I don't like that arguement of "oh he is playing against weaker teams".
Any team can be good on any given night, the Islanders have defeated some strong teams. They just handled the Red Wings once again. The Islanders top line is pretty darn decent.
Props to Bobrovsky...I hope he keeps it up and steals the job from Bryz or gets traded.
