Let's build a new Jackets team from former Jackets

In the thread of whether or not there would be a new GM before the trade deadline, there was a mini-thread created between a couple of posters as to whether or not a team of former Jackets still playing in the NHL could be constructed that would be better than the current team. So I thought it deserved its own thread.

To start, the previous thread mentioned a group of d-men so I'll list them here:

Beuachimin
Spacek
Hainsey
Klesla
McQuaid
Hejda

I'll throw in Aaron Rome as a 7th D

For forwards I'll start with

Jake
Curtis Glencross
Ray Whitney
Manny Malhotra
Jason Chimera
Mike Rupp

Because centers have always been scarce here, that position will be tough to fill but lets see what we come up with

Conklin and Garon in net. Any other ex-goalies out there?

Boucher is in Carolina, but he's been hurt for most of the year.

Can we bring back Doug to coach? He deserves some more time with the pile of crap he assembled.

Here's what I came up with. The center position was really difficult though.

Ray Whitney (14G, 22A) -Manny Malhotra (4G, 9A) -Jake Voracek (6G, 20A)
Curtis Glencross (18G, 15A) -Gilbert Brule (0 points) -Scottie Upshall (1G, 2A been injured)
Jason Chimera (14G, 7A possible career year) -Mike Rupp (3G, 0A) -Raffi Torres (6G, 5A)
Mathieu Darche (2G, 4A) -Andrew Murray (1G, 3A) -Jason Williams (1G, 1A)

Jan Hejda (4G, 8A) -Francois Beauchemin (4G, 10A)
Rusty Klesla (1G, 7A) -Adam McQuaid (1G, 3A)
Jaroslav Spacek (1G, 6A) -Ron Hainsey (0G, 6A)
Kris Russell (5G, 3A)

Mathieu Garon (11-12-2, 2.94 GAA, .900 Sv%)
Ty Conklin (2-5, 3.28 GAA, .888 Sv%)

This lineup certainly couldn't be any worse than what's on the ice currently. The forwards don't have as much firepower (that's up for debate), but I think that defense would be an upgrade and the goaltending would certainly be at least league average between the two. When all would be said and done, this squad of formers would probably have a better record than the current lineup.

If that does not scream Management inepitude, I don't know what does.

It's fun and I enjoy a trip down nostalgia lane as much as they next guy. But I'm not really interested in this as an exercise in "woe is us." Lots of teams have lots of ex-players who are good. Some might even be able to field an ex-player team as good as their current lineup (I'm unconvinced that roster is better than the current CBJ's). This also fails to account for organizational needs, etc, at individual points in time. Way too simple, IMO.

The two most egregious of those are Whitney and Glencross, although Glencross was not a superstar here by any means. The Whitney move, to this day, baffles me.

Lighten Up Francis, it's the only way to survive this train wreck of a season.

Whitney didnt want to stay for 3 more years, only 4 or more IIRC. He's on his 3rd team since the Jackets, but we were heading in a different way at the time, and it became an ego contest....DM's and his. So I would have loved to have had him for a couple more years, but that wasnt good enough for Whits

Settle down, Beavis. I was only speaking from my perspective. I find it enjoyable from a trivia/nostalgia angle, but it's far too much of a simplification to use it as evidence of organizational incompetence. That's just piling on.

And I'd think if this train wreck of a season has you so distraught, you might not want to spend time thinking about how it's all gone wrong over the years.

Isn't piling on what this season is all about. I'll agree that this thread really is rather trivial, every season is different and who knows if any lineup that anyone could put together from ex-Jackets would be better than the current Jackets. But have some fun with it and worry less about the abomination on the ice now, you're sanity will thank you. On paper, this year's team should have been the best team ever iced by this club but injury, suspension, lack of chemistry, poor coaching, whatever has turned this season into a comedy of errors.

As for researching the past, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to find evidence of organizational incompetence, that has been apparent basically since they opened the doors on Nationwide Boulevard. Being a lifelong resident of the city, I've been here to witness all the misery (with the exception of 2009). Being a Jackets fan started as fun and entertaining, became frustrating, painful and now totally apathetic. Some will call that fairweather, but I don't care anymore. I'll still be a fan but the organization needs to "get it" that the only thing that will cure their ills is winning. No more excuses, do the work to finally put a product worthy of excitement on the ice. That goes from the top down. If players aren't willing to put in the work or sacrifice, then find others who will. At this point, I don't care how difficult the task is, find the people to get the task done.

I've pretty much cut back my fandom to watching games in spurts. At one time I thought of being a season ticket holder, but those thoughts have went by the wayside, I refuse to throw away hard earned money. I know the organization cares, I do, but the perception through their performance is that they don't, so why should I? At this point, as a fan, what keeps me from being distraught is laughing at how horrible things have gotten, because it's hard to imagine that things could be much worse. If the organization decides that they want to give the city something to be proud of, then it will again be fun to be a fan. As of right now, frankly it's embarrassing to be a fan of the Jackets.

Sorry, rant over.

I have that affect on people. Just as Mrs. Lasse.

Wasn't trying to incite -- was just saying that for me it can be a fun exercise apart from all the other contextual stuff. But I'm a nut for nostalgia stuff - I once spent a day compiling a list of great hockey names from my youth to send to my friends.

It's really kind of surprising how bad that ex-Jacket team would be, especially considering their present-day stats, which come while playing for their current (and better) teams. Jeepers, I sure wish you could have put in Jody Shelley somewhere.

So nobody would take Glencross back? I guess being on track for 36 goals or so is no big deal to the offense laden Blue Jackets. And I have to believe that D corp at least right now is as good if not better than the cluster we now have. And anyone want a mulligan on Carter for Jake and a #1?
