Dane Byers? Why Do They Keep Calling Up Pluggers? (UPD: Byers susp. 3 games)

I have had it. We lose Carter and Umberger (not to mention Letestu) who are top line guys. The team has had trouble scoring as it is, and the power play has been bad. Yet instead of calling up a potential scorer, they keep calling up third and fourth line guys.

The Blue Jackets are going to be basically playing with 9 or 10 forwards that would be considered third or fourth line players at best. Can someone please explain to me why we are replacing injured first line guys with third and fourth line guys from the AHL? It is not like we don't have some highly talented offensive guys in Springfield.

Please don't respond by saying that they don't want to call up young guys and subject them to the mess in Columbus, Johansen is younger than any of them and he seems to be doing pretty well.

Maybe the front office is smarter then some here give it credit for and they are in full fail mode?

Exactly what top line guys do we have wasting away in the minors? If they were truly top line guys they would already be here [and possibly injured too, seeing how our season has gone].

Along the lines with the full fail notion. Isn't Springfield still in the hunt for playoffs and whatnot? Why take a talented kid away from that environment just to have him play out the string in a lost NHL season that's only half over?

As annoying as this call up is, Calvert and Atkinson both are playing very well in Springy. They have a team down there that still has a shot at making a run. I dont need to explain where the CBJ sits. I think they probably want to keep those guys down so they can play and be a part of something special. The jackets only had their minor league team in the playoffs once or twice. Young guys are thrown in and expected to lead a team without having success anywhere else but maybe jnrs or Europe. I think its very important if the CBJ want to rebuild the right way, lets be successful at all levels.

CBJ also probably want to put some guys on the roster now in more prominant roles to see if they can handle it. Boll, Dorsett, Dmac, Johan, etc.

Why Do They Keep Calling Up Pluggers? Are you serious, there are many holes, so many the Jackets look Dutch!

I'm not as enamored with Kubalik as most, but he's not really what I'd call a plug. I would guess they called up a guy like Byers because they wanted a little more bulk coming up against Phoenix and San Jose.

Also, is Dane Byers really that much different than RJ of 2011-12? Honest question.

I'm guessing it's because they want to replace RJ with a defensively responsible guy who can play on the PK. That isn't going to be Atkinson.

Calvert has been showing improvement in Springfield and might fit that mold, but he might as well get prime ice time rather than 4th line minutes.

I have no faith in our front office doing anything that makes sense anymore.

And quite frankly, at this point, who gives a **** who they call up.

I believe it should be "Fail for 'insert overall #2 pick name here'"

Do ya really think this team can win the lottery even with the worst record in the league? This franchise fails at everything they try, so who is #2? Isnt there another Russian everyone is looking at?

Mikhail Grigorenko is in the running too... after him there are several defensemen. It’s the deepest draft in several years.

The "fail for Nail" is six months old. That said, I'd still take him as of this post.

Galchenyuk and Grigorenko.

Galchenyuk's been injured all season anyway. I'll withhold comment on Grigorenko, since the last time I commented on a top prospect avoiding injury, he was injured less than 48 hours later.

I don't know that this is accurate. Although we all did our part in touting this draft as being extremely deep, including whispers of 2003 redux, there's been a lot of shifting.

The first is because of injuries. I've never seen such a large crop of top prospects all come down with long-term injuries in their draft years, and hopefully I never will again.

But the second has to do with the nature of scouting. If a group of kids a year out are being scouted and touted, it's based on the assumption that they'll continue to progress at a normal rate. But to be honest, there look to be a lot of guys who haven't taken that next step. In the case of Nick Ebert, I have yet to see a report from any point in the season that isn't riddled with question marks.

At this point, there seems to be a slight breakaway of the top four from the rest of the class, which is looking decidedly average at this point. That's not even including Galchenyuk. And it also doesn't include my latest prospect crush, who hopefully will make a certain someone forget about ever uttering the name "Alex Petrovic" again.

I think the simple answer to your question is why would you not want your top prospects to continue to enjoy success, learn and develop? You don't hurt a guy like Byers development by bringing him up. We, as fans, could argue all day about where it's better to develop players but for once I am happy we are letting some of our better prospects play in an environment that they appear to be thriving in.

Johansen is a different case since he is not elligible for the AHL. They could send hin back to Junior but I don't think that helps him any. You could make the argument about Kubalik or the others I guess. This move doesnt' bother me one bit.
