Lame Day Thread: 14 Jan '12 - St. Louis Blues: More Than Our Opponents Name - 7PM FSN

What a strange world we live in. Winter in Minnesota is damn near snowless to this point, the Mayan Calender ends this year, and I outright called dibs on this GDT. I must be insane.

So what's on the docket for tonight?

Not trolling, this was an ACTUAL Jersey.

The Saint Louis Blues.

Louie comes into this one with a 25-12-6 record (56 pts) in 43 games played, good for 4th in the West as I write this up. They are coming off an overtime loss to Vanny on Thursday which snapped a 4 game winning streak, with wins against the 'Yotes, Eddy, The Avs, and Habs.

The Blues have been a model of success since tossing their head coach overboard on what may or may not have been a sinking ship and bringing in Ken Hitchcock. Several other teams have gotten new head coaches since then, but none have had the dramatic effect that Hitchcock has had on the Blues. This is probably because the Blues didn't outright suck before the hiring, unlike most other teams who fire their coaches during the season.

Blues Lines:
Oshie-Steen-Backes
Perron-Berglund-Stewart
Sobotka-Arnott-Langenbrunner
Reaves/Porter-Nichol-D'Agostini

Jackman-Shattenkirk
Polak-Pieterangelo
Colaiacovo-Huskins/Russell

Elliott
Halak

And this WOULD be a precursor to what should be an amazing division rivalry next year in the New Norris, that is if a certain jack ass by the name of Donald Fehr hadn't torpedoed the new alignment as a way to flip the bird to the NHL.

Oh well. We hate the Blues anyway. Even if our announcers still think our "rivals" are Vanny and Eddy. What do they know right? There's a reason we call them "Dumb and Dumber".

So who the heck is the other team involved in this Hockey Transaction?

I hope that Post-It note has good glue, we may need to leave it there a while.

The Winnesota Mild come into this game 22-16-6 (50 pts) in 44 games. After a great game against the Sharks on Tuesday at the X, the Wild laid a fat load of excrement on the ice at the United Center in Chicago. One big step forward, two steps backwards. Now they are currently hanging on to a playoff spot for dear life (at least as I write this), and are in jeopardy of falling into obscurity dangerously soon if the ship doesn't start getting turned around.

Wild Lines:
Setoguchi-Koivu-Heatley
Johnson-Cullen-Clutterbuck
McIntyre-Brodziak-Powe
Wellman-Peters-Staubitz

Schultz-Falk
Lundin-Zidlicky

Stoner-Spurgeon

Harding
Hackett

So how do I feel about the Wild right now? Well, a lot like this:

I didn't think I could be LESS happy, but I AM.

Quite honestly this is starting to drive me a little insane. The Wild are an amazing team when they stick to the system that Yeo has laid out for them. They forecheck aggressively, cause turnovers out the wazoo, and take advantage of any mistake the opponent makes.

In contrast to that is the Wild that we've all grown to loathe lately. The team that forgets to send the second man in to forecheck, the team that dumps the puck in and then barely tries to chase. The team that takes dumb penalties and cant seem to draw one to save their live, and when we get one our powerplay is so powerless that they might as well start washing them out intentionally cause they are that bad with the man advantage.

We've started to see glimpses that the "good" Wild is starting to come back. The entire San Jose game was pretty decent. And the first seven minutes or so against Chicago was also well. But the problem is the Wild just don't seem to care enough about sticking to things when things get a little rough.

The good news is that Mike Yeo and Chuck Fletcher are completely pissed about everything, and heads are starting to roll. The latest casualty is Colton Gilles, who was placed on waivers on Friday and if he clears he is headed down to Houston to work on his game.

In addition, hopefully there will be some changes on the defensive side of the puck. In fact beat writer Mike Russo has staked his career on Twitter betting that we will finally get to see Lundin play after he's been stuck in the press box since the 1950s. Why has he been stuck there? That's just another mystery that no one knows the answer to. A brief twitter campaign under the #FreeLundin hashtag resulted in a call back from Russo in a Star Tribune article, but no answers.

And how bad has the rest of the defense been lately? Well Greg Zanon is so bad that he has simply stopped answering questions about his play lately. Why? Who knows, but someone around here speculated that the decision to not talk to the media comes from the GM's office as a way to keep Zanon from lowering his trade value...

An accurate representation of Zanon's trade value at this point.

You can't really damage what's already completely broken tho. So I'm anticipating that he is gone one way or another in the next few days. If GMCF manages to get anything for him I will be very impressed.

C'mon man, your words hurt me more than a shot I blocked with my foot.

I don't care, now SHUT UP!

And now just watch, in the same way I gave Seto props for playing hard in my last GDT, and he was a healthy scratch after missing a meeting, Zanon will come out in this game and be a complete shutdown monster or something. Either that or he will be MORE terrible. I have no idea how this Jinxing stuff works.

So theres a CHANCE? Awesome.

Why am I surrounded by such incompetence?

What about the rest of the defense? See for yourself:

And this wedge of swiss could probably produce more points from the blue line too.

So what can we look forward to tonight? Well hopefully the Blues get the Wild's blood flowing, because in the last two meetings with them, thing's have been heated. These are two teams that legitimately don't like each other, and hopefully that works as an incentive for the Wild to do what they need to do: play the damned system.

Otherwise the Wild might be taking their Saint Louis "Blues" with them.

I'm gonna follow these turkeys every where unless they win tonight.

And since it worked last time, here's some obligatory pics:

The more the better, right?

I stole this off Mr. Ed, who is actually a Zebra. Hope it still works.

And here's your zinger:

Is this a stealth prediction about tonights game? You be the judge!

Go.

Panger is awesome. If I had the option of watching the Blues feed for this one, I would in a heartbeat.

Oh and don't worry, I will try to read/post here while being at Le Colisee watching Grigorenko (in the press box) and the Remparts playing.

EDIT: And nope, they won't play against Phillips/Coyle's team.

The Wild had better come to play a full game tonight. The Blues are a solid team.

I would love to see Kassian get called up. When the Wild play the Blues it's usually the type of game where his services are necessary.

I wish Kassian would just get called up on a near permanent basis so we can have someone to push back when someone decides to take a run at us.

Ya I like Kassian over Staubitz every day of the week but that won't help scoring. I don't think the Wild are in this boat if Gui/Koivu/Bouchard are fully healthy the entire season. Gui is a good player who they need badly in the lineup .

I'm not anticipating Lats or Bouchard coming back anytime soon. Probably not even this season. They're both concussed out.

Anyone else skipping this game to go check out the crashed ice finals tonight? I'm hoping to be able to bop around to a few bars to get updates on the score but I think it'll be a good time to take a break from the game.

Hmmm...watch the Wild lose yet again or watch crazy mofos skating down a steep course...

Red Bull. Along with prob every other Minnesotan. We should have a GDT for that instead.

Don't know if I'll watch or not. I've always like Blues/Wild games. Don't know why they hate each other so much though.

because Stoner was going to kill Oshie and then Backes stepped in to save him and took a massive beatdown

They are rivals now and will be great games if that realignment ever happens. Every game is always super chippy. Koivu hates Backes too.
