Not really a fan of either team. Nothing against them, just not a fan. This game would be awesome. Original 6 matchup, US vs Canada (sorta), the Big House...what's not to love?? I'm hoping for an epic 24/7 series and I hope Lidstrom plays another year just to see what he's like behind the scene.
I'm more excited for this than I was for the Pens/Caps. And I'm a Pens fan.
.. and I hope Lidstrom plays another year just to see what he's like behind the scene.
First thing I thought about. Would be really cool if we got to see a personal side of him and not just the robotic model pro that is pretty much all we ever get. Nothing wrong with being correct and formal, but you still wonder what he's really like.
Also, Holmström is gonna be fun to watch if he's still in the league by then. And of course, Pavel.
I love this match up. I'm an old fart who grew up in Detroit before cable TV was around. I watched the Red Wings on local Detroit TV and every Saturday night the Leafs on CBC channel 9 in Hockey Night in Canada. The only preseason game I enjoy going to is Leafs at Wings when Leaf's nation travels well and fills half the Joe and are pumped for a preseason game.
I'm a Wings fan and I can say Leaf's fans are great and love their hockey. Leaf's nation will travel in force and enjoy their New Year's Eve and New Year's around Detroit and Ann Arbor.
It would be great if somehow the NHL could set aside about 60% of the seats/section in the Big House and sell them in the US on-line and about 40% to be sold on-line in Canada. How great would the atmosphere be with 115,000 fans and where you could see a solid section of Red and a solid section of Blue with both fan bases cheering on their team. That truly would be a winter classic that would rival and pass any New Year's Day bowl crowd. The above has success written all over it.

Awesome. Toronto-Detroit is a huge underrated rivalry with huge fanbases... Should be awesome. Now that we know Canadian teams can be involved, I'd love to see a Boston-Montreal in the future.
NHL made a smart move, they're going to be rolling in cash after this one. I expect the stadium to be sold out. Not a very long way to Detroit from Toronto, and Toronto fans would probably go to the end of the Earth to see the Leafs outside. Jerseys will be constantly sold out, if they continue 24/7 the ratings will be insane, etc.
That will be cool too, but I rather see the canucks vs bruins. It will be epic.
.....Detroit and Toronto have a rivalry? I was under the impression that this was the most pointless Winter Classic ever aside from the big name franchises.
Dead wrong. See my posts a few above yours. The original six, geographic proximity, the two teams being in the same conference for most of their existence, and many Ontario towns being split 50% Wings and 50% Leafs make it a great rivalry.
Wings are my team and always will be. Leafs will always be the team I enjoy 2'nd most and I love watching Leafs/Wings more than any other Wings opponent.
nope, you just don't know NHL history. but at least you're willing to admit it.
I guess it depends on your definition of rivalry. History books? Sure this one gets the check. Fan hatred/interest of other franchise? If it exists its new to me. Player rivalry? They don't play often enough to develop anything..
