Will a Leafs-Redwings winter classic get a 24/7?

Some things to consider:

Quote:
Which brings us to where this series is going once Season 2 is in the books. Could "24/7" shift its focus from the Winter Classic to another segment of the NHL season? "No idea," said Harmon. "There's a lot of things that have to happen. We're focused on this year."
Will there even be an "HBO 24/7" series with the NHL next season?
It's a sensitive subject for those involved in the production. The viewership numbers were down this season, at least on the night when the show premiered, yet the buzz is still palpable among sports fans.
But it's not about the ratings with HBO; in this case, it's about the leadership.
Former HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg was the guiding light for the network's sports reality programming. He's now set up at his own shop, working with the NHL in "24/7"-like series like "NHL 36" on NBC Sports Network.
Former Showtime executive Ken Hershman is the new head of HBO Sports, and nothing has been determined for a third season of "24/7". The Associated Press speculated that "he could decide to keep the show, and possibly expand it from its four-week run, or move in a different direction."
NHL COO John Collins was also non-committal for next season, although he clearly hopes to renew for a third season.
"We've been doing it on a year to year basis. They have a new management team coming in now," he told Nick Cotsonika of Yahoo! Sports. "But I think it's been great for us, I think, and I think it's been great for them, too. So hopefully we'll be able to figure it out because we'd like to go forward."
If Hershman and the new management team at HBO bring back "24/7" and keep it focused on the Winter Classic, it will likely feature the Detroit Red Wings next season against an undetermined opponent.
But here's an interesting revelation: While fans have often weighed the "24/7" aspect heavily into the Winter Classic invitation process, Harmon says HBO doesn't have final cut on this decision.
"I think I'm safe to say that we have no input," he said. "The NHL is in charge of the Winter Classic, which is a bigger thing than '24/7'. They tell us and then we make our decisions based on the teams playing in the Classic."

The Winter Classic is featuring a Canadian team. HBO doesn't sell subscriptions in Canada so I can't imagine they care so much about the Toronto market.
Also, just my opinion but I can't imagine the leafs/red wings being the two most entertaining teams for this type of thing but I have no idea what others think.

I hope so. I think with Tor being in it the viewing will be through the roof.

although Toronto has one of the biggest fan bases in hockey (maybe even number 1), the large majority of these fans are from Canada. As HBO Canada doesn't really exist, I'm unsure of how much this matters to HBO. How many leaf fans are there in the states?

HBO doesn't offer its services in Canada.
A company called Astral media owns the name HBO Canada and licenses HBO television shows.

As a sports fan (not even just because I'm a hockey fan), I think it will be fascinating TV to see cameras follow around the Leafs 24/7. I can't think of a single city that has as much of an unhealthy obsession with one specific team as Toronto has with the Leafs, other than maybe Montreal and Green Bay.

I love the idea of the Winter Classic. I also think that the vent should be shared with the teams that can logically hold the event. Toronto has not been in the event but Wings have. therefore i think that other teams should get a look. How aobut he Avs and the Wild or St. louis and another team.

I say this in the nicest way possible lol, but the viewership for those 2/3 teams would be nothing compared to DET/TO

I for one can't wait to see Grabovski mic'd up. He's no Universe, but he does challenge players to street fights.

Yes they do.

Largest fanbase in the league + 24/7 = $$$ for HBO

check out the wikipedia or go search around the internet. I'll leave you with this:

HBO's parent company Time Warner is not a shareholder, and only licenses the name to Astral and Corus.

To be honest, I would've liked Colorado and Detroit better as a hockey fan, but in terms of financial success, this is far better.

Can I ask why? It seems to me that rivalry has been over for quite some time.
I don't see that being compelling in the least and probably not a competitive game.

Because the 80s were longer ago than the late 90s.

As for sweaters, I'd love to see the Leafs wear what they wore back in 1917 as the Toronto Arena Hockey Club... except with the Centennial coming up so soon I'd expect MLSE to choose something along the lines of the 1930 era whites white Detroit could possibly wear the red version of what they wore in 2010 against Chicago.
