Gilbert? Spurgeon? Brodin? We have enough guys that move the puck. We need a more physical, top 4 guy.

Gilbert, Brodin, Spurgeon, and Kampfer are all looking for PMD spots. We really have two needs, a Suter-type top pairing shutdown guy, and a Bergeron/Souray/etc PP specialist.

Honestly the way Gilbert's playing he looks like a top pairing D-man. 30+ minutes a night, moving the puck well, gets it out of trouble, and he's knocking on the door constantly on the PP.

So what you're saying is:

Suter-Gilbert
Scandella-Brodin
Kampfer-Spurgeon

Could make a respectable defensive corps? Too bad I think he'll re-sign with Nashy.

I think we need some help on the back-end, a massive #1 shut down guy would be great, but those guys don't come around so easily. Anyone think you could consider Gilbert a #2 or a top pairing defenseman?

He wouldn't be ideal in that role, but I think he'd be serviceable.

I think if you paired him with a real #1, he could probably pass as a #2. I don't think Brodin will be ready for the NHL next year, I'd like to see him play a few years in the AHL.

1 year, maybe? You think he needs 3-4 years down there?

Ideally, Brodin would get a year in the AHL. Getting used to the NA game, the 82 game schedule, and the more physical play. He could use the time to continue to bulk up and work on his offensive game.

...

I don't understand what's so hard about realizing he's not playing a year in the AHL.

I'm thinking maybe a year with a call-up if he's doing well down there. I'd love to see him come in and take a spot, but just generally, it takes defenders longer to develop. I'd love to see him be a mainstay on our blueline for a long time. He shouldn't make the team unless he is ready. If he's ready, then I'm all for it.

Well, Fletcher has indicated it's NHL or SEL for Brodin this next year. I think it would be hard to picture him going to Houston the year after considering they think he'll make the NHL team for 12-13.

Brodin in Houston?

Not happening.

He's either with the Wild or back to Sweden for another year...

Out of all of our prospects, Brodin is the baptism by fire one. Just toss him in there and see what he's made of.

I'd say more like

Suter-Gilbert
Scandella-Brodin
Stoner-Kampfer/Spurgeon

Mostly because I think they need one more big body shutdown guy who can play the PK on the third pairing, and Kampfer/Spurgeon is just tiny and soft.

But yeah that'd be good. I think Gilbert's showing the potential Fletch saw in him now and he's definitely playing better than Schultz ever did post-Lemaire.

Brodin has just gotta make the team next year. There's no indication he's going to take a step back. Is he 100% ready? No, probably not. But he's going to need to develop on an NHL rink, and he's not going to waste time and money in Houston.

Plus I still think we can shelter his minutes a bit, if need be at the beginning of the year. Let him get a feel for it and see if he can take off.

Agreed.

Hell, Spurgeon managed to step into the NHL and steadily gain more and more minutes as an undersized 20-year-old who was playing juniors the year before.

Don't see why we should doubt a high IQ first rounder who's been playing against men for two years.

My only concern about Brodin is how much he's bulked up. Will he be "big enough" for the NHL game by the start of the season?

Let's be real here. The chances of us getting Suter are so slim it's really not even worth mentioning. I don't see him leaving Nashville and even if he does he'll probably go to a much more competitive team like Detroit.

That being said, who could we target this off-season in terms of a top 4 d-man? There's so few on the market I gotta think we'd have to go with a trade to acquire one and I have my doubts as to whether GMCF would be willing to give up any assets needed to acquire one.

If we aren't going to trade for a #1 guy, then I don't think we should trade at all. With Gilbert, Scandella and Brodin we have 3/4 of a top 4. If we want to solidify the 4th spot, do so in FA without giving up any assets. Otherwise, roll with what we got.
