JARED COWEN: A
ZACK SMITH: A (playing his role almost perfectly)
ERIK CONDRA: A (overachieving, Chris Kelly v2 in the making)
COLIN GREENING: B (overachieving as a rookie on the top line as a complimentary player to the dynamic duo of 9MM and Jason's Pizza)
How does Gonchar and Phillips get the same grade, with Gonchar being "prone to mistakes in his own end", while Phillips "Has rebounded from a difficult season, and is showing veteran leadership"?
Biased, alcohol-binged cheapseats viewing/snoozing rotations, or both?
I thought the ratings were pretty generous and people think some guys should be rated higher?? Cowen, for a rookie should be an A+ guy but as an nhler, he deserves his rating and no higher. He still makes mistakes and he still has a lot to work on and improve.
Thought Craig Anderson, Chris Phillips, Bobby Butler were all rated too high. I don't remember what Zenon was rated as but it was probably too high as well.
Spezza and Karlsson and maybe Zack Smith are the only A+ players we have so far this season, imo.
Michalek, Alfredsson, Kuba, Gonchar have all been hughely awesome for this team and should be some form of A, imo.
Still hate the fat piece of crap that wrote the article but it was still worth the 20 second read.
-Cowen deserves more than a freakin' B, an A easily
-Anderson should be a B or B- instead of a B+.
-Greening deserves at least a B
Agreed mostly. How is Konopka a B+ too? I don't think he has been very effective at all, even in his limited role. He is one of the few players that would not get at least a B from me. Terrible decisions, terrible penalties. Not that effective on the ice. C-.
Greening deserves an A not a C+ Like really.... He is on the first line? Who expected that? He is a rookie and he is doing fine with Michalek and Spezza. What is he supposed to do score a point per game?
Zack Smith should be A+ not B+. Who expected this level of maturity and not taking bad penalties anymore while scoring at a 40 point+ pace?
Carkner and Turris have played enough to not be incomplete. I'd give Turris a B+ and Carkner a B. Carkner is what he is and that is worth a B. Turris could get an A if he keeps playing this well.
personally, I find Butler is playing pretty well. He looks good without the puck and with any luck, he'd be over 10 goals to date. The guy has hit how many posts so far? and on most of those he blew the puck by the goalie. And that is playing 4th line minutes all year. He has a rocket for shot.
I think that Konopka has been great. 4th line center. Wins a lot of faceoffs, plays physical. And the added bonus is that if you go back thru the years whenever the Sens have had someone else to take the majority of the fights, we end up with a much better season out of Neil and that seems to be holding true again this year.
I always wonder how these grades are supposed to work. Do you grade players based on expectation or based on their performance in the roles they're given?
For example, Greening probably isn't good enough to be a top 6 winger, but he's basically done about as well as you could expect him to in that role. I'd give him a B based on my expectations of him but about a D+ if I'm grading him as a top 6 winger.
