He makes 1.2 million dollars this year and 900k next year. His cap hit is 1.1 million. I love my goons and hope he stays but do you think he'll be buried next season for Sestito or a 14th forward? I don't think him being traded is likely but a team looking to hit the cap floor without paying the full cap hit may be willing [maybe a Florida or Tampa, talk about a retirement gift].

No I'm Canadian, and wondering when Flyers fans started hating their enforcers...

When they stopped being good at hockey as well.

Horrific contract I agree. As for bad signing, we'll agree to disagree.

I'm Canadian too and I started hating Shelly the second he signed a ridiculous contact. I hated him more when I realized he sucked worse than I thought.

Also: enforcers usually enforce. Just saying.

FYI everyone else, I assume this post was started as an attempt at trolling.

No, it wasn't an attempt at trolling.

It's not Shelley's fault for signing a contract for 3.3 million dollars.
Think about it, he was 34, had no other skills, and was in for the cash-in of a lifetime. What would you do? How could you hate a guy for that? It's Holmgren's fault for offering the contract.

EDIT: Looking at 24/7 he also has a young family to support. He's obviously used to living an NHL lifestyle and was not willing to give it up just because Flyer fans would grow to dislike him. I seriously doubt he will retire like Cote as well before the contract is up. I'm pretty sure he wants that last $900,000, even if he has to go to Adirondack to retrieve it.

Riley Cote was paid absolute pennies, and for 1 season, was actually good at his job. The following season he was terrible, and everyone turned on him (from a hockey perspective), and he was jettisoned.

Sounds like exactly what should have happened IMO.

Don't misinterpret a desire to have Shelley gone, as people hating Jody Shelley the person. He seems like a great guy. I still don't want him anywhere near my team at what he's making. Even at league minimum, I'd balk at him as my 13th forward.

Cote played 2 full seasons for the flyers.

Then in 2009-2010 he was a healthy scratch for all but 15 games.

His last contract, which was for 3 years and 1-way as well. It was for half as much money, I'll give you that, but it was above league minimum and he was about half as good a player as Shelley [not saying much I know].

SEASON NHL Salary AHL Salary Bonuses Cap Hit
2008-09 $525,000 $525,000 $0 — $550,000
2009-10 $525,000 $525,000 $0 — $550,000
2010-11 $600,000 $600,000 $0 — $550,000

Unless he surprisingly retires, or is sent down next season to Adirondack, he will be the 14th forward most likely [Sestito will probably be 13th].

This.

Love the guy. Hate the player. Loathe the contract.

I never said anything to the contrary.

I said he made pennies, had 1 good year (as far as his "job" was concerned), and then was gone.

I'd dispute that he's half the player Shelley is. They are both worthless, and Cote is a better skater (pathetic).

Shelley had 10 points one year, Cote's high was 4. He made half of what Shelley made, which is still hardly pennies, and as for next season Shelley makes 900k and if Cote had played last year he would have made 600k. The money difference isn't that extreme.

Yes it is haha.

The minimum NHL player salary in 2005-06 and 2006-07 will be $450,000; $475,000 in 2007-08 and 2008-09; $500,000 in 2009-10 and 2010-11, and $525,000 in 2011-12 (to the extent the CBA is extended by the Union).
So he made $75,000 more than the minimum.

You can't get much closer to the minimum than Cote was. What more do you want?

He made a terrible salary for a terrible player. Shelley makes a good salary, for a terrible player.

475k, then 500k the final two years lol, that would match his skill level. Point is Shelley is an aging veteran with a track record. Older players generally get paid quite well, just ask the New York Rangers. I agree that the contract is horrible, and the salary is horrible, but it's not the worst ever.

Anyhow....what do we do with it.

Using the New York Rangers' idea of market value is just a terrible idea for any argument you may want to put together.

Ironically they were only offering Shelley 900k for 1-year. We both agree it was a bad contract, I only disagree because I think a 1-year was a good idea. Why are we arguing? 1 year of Shelley, 14 fights, 4 points, 58 games. It'd be over if I was GM.

Let's talk about what we could do about the contract [if we were GM].

I never would have done it in the first place if it were me.

Fast forward to present day, I'd waive him immediately.

Realistically...I don't think Shelley is going anywhere until there is literally no other option. Until there is some big deal on the table, (think us trading for Weber/Suter), and the ONLY way to get a few extra 100k in cap space is waiving Shelley, I don't believe Shelley is going anywhere. If it hasn't happened already, I don't think it will. He can't get any more worthless.

Because the contract was signed before he turned 35, he can be buried in the minors, freeing a roster spot and cap space [when the Rangers did that to Brashear with his 35+ contract in 2010 he still counted towards the cap].

He'll be sticking around the rest of this year though I think guys. The team loves him. If Sestito keeps playing well gets re-signed next year, especially if it's a 1-way deal, then we'll see what happens. Nothing is imminent.
