Michigan, NHL Discussing 2013 Winter Classic At The Big House

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=385421

I know it's been discussed before, but now there's an article confirming the discussion. I think this would be amazing.

Hopefully it clears the way for a 2014 Winter Classic in Happy Valley between the Flyers and the Penguins.

Now that would be epic...

Half the stadium filled w/ Flyers fans, half the stadium filled w/ Pens fans.

Pretty much the perfect game to take the Winter Classic to the next level.

I wouldn't mind seeing Detroit vs Toronto at the big house.

Would be JUICED to see Penguins vs Flyers in happy valley. But Caps are getting 2014 almost without a doubt, right?

I don't think they would want the Flyers and Pens in it for a third time already. Not to mention that no one wants any publicity with Penn State at the moment...

The announcement would be a year and a half away... long time for the scandal to die down.

and I think EVERYONE that enjoys good hockey would like to see Flyers vs. Pens @ Beaver Stadium.

I agree I'm sick of Pens vs. (insert other team) or Flyers vs. Bruins, stuff like that. But it's puzzling to me that Flyers vs. Pens hasn't happened yet. It needs to happen.

Would easily be the most epic WC to date, but I doubt it happens any time soon. Penn State scandal will take 3-4 years for people to forget, plus the fact that Flyers and Pens have both been in the Winter Classic twice already.

I think someday it will happen. Just not next year. That's not fair to everyone else.

If things were "fair" then it'd be Florida vs. Minnesota next year.

It's not about fairness. It's a showcase game for the NHL. While other teams' fans might get angry if the Flyers or Pens are in it again, it really doesn't matter... nobody cares about them.

The Winter Classic is about showcasing the best the NHL has to offer, some of its' most bitter rivalries in an attempt to get casual fans or non fans more interested in the sport. It's a celebration of the NHL.

And if Crosby gets back and is healthy, there is not a doubt in my mind that the 2013 game should be Philly vs. Pittsburgh @ Beaver Stadium.

And just as a side point, the Winter Classic should pretty much only involve Pittsburgh, Philly, NYR, Wash, Chicago, Boston, Detroit... basically only the hockey crazy American markets (since the heritage classic is for canadian teams).

I also don't understand why the NHL doesn't try and make it bigger. Schedule 2 NHL games instead of one.

For example, you could have Philly vs. Pittsburgh in State College @ 1PM and then Detroit vs. Boston in Detroit @ 5PM or something like that.

Or you could even schedule 2 events @ the same neutral location. For example:

Venue: Beaver Stadium State College, PA
Game 1: Pittsburgh (3 hours away) vs. Philly (3.5 hours away)
Game 2: New York (4.5 hours away) vs. Washington (4 hours away)

Screw everyone else! I have a bunch of friends, fans of other teams, complaining to me about the Flyers having been in it twice now and I couldnt give a damn.

I also don't think the Penn State scandal would have any bearing what so ever, its just a venue, not as if it would be Pens or Flyers Vs. Penn State. My guess is if it happened there in 2 years (2014) unless it took that long for a ruling to come down on all the offenders, we wouldnt hear about it.

It's going to be the Wings and Leafs. I can't believe they actually let a Canadian team in but I guess the thought of 100,000+ fans will spend a ton of money and there will be a lot of Canadians crossing the border from Southern Ontario to see this one.

I don't want to see Philly or Pittsburgh in the WC for another ten years. There are other teams that deserve some publicity.

I think in 2014 we'll see something like Tampa and Washington in DC. Depending on how they compete this year and first half of next year. Maybe even Blackhawks vs Caps in DC. I think i've heard/read from a few different sources that DC is a foregone conclusion in 2014. Could be wrong, though.

I can see DC going very wrong. It can get pretty warm here in winter.

I've worn a jacket twice this winter.

It's a freaking travesty, and I'm thinking of moving north.

Yeah. A long sleeve shirt has been adequate pretty much all season. Only way Caps host a Winter Classic is if they take the show to Blacksburg or promise to air condition the outdoors.

great, so we're going to have to listen to Brian "Fathead" Burke during next year's 24/7
