Gunna watch this game, I have off from work nothing else to do. But in all seriousness does anyone actually still think we can catch fire and make the playoffs or are we going to have top 5 pick

WE certainly have a chance. Just take a look at the standings (1st number is games, last number is points):
1 NY Rangers 43 28 11 4 60
2 Boston 41 28 12 1 57
3 Washington 43 24 17 2 50
4 Philadelphia 43 26 13 4 56
5 Ottawa 46 25 15 6 56
6 New Jersey 44 25 17 2 52
7 Florida 43 21 14 8 50
8 Pittsburgh 44 23 17 4 50
Toronto 44 22 17 5 49
Winnipeg 44 20 19 5 45
Buffalo 44 19 20 5 43
Montreal 45 17 20 8 42
Carolina 47 16 24 7 39
NY Islanders 42 16 20 6 38
Tampa Bay 44 17 23 4 38
The Islanders have played the least games out of everyone (except Boston). These four games this week are really important. The pressure is on them to at least get 6 of 8 points this week.
Oh yeah, the Isles game.. haha. We're playing really well lately so I expect this to be a good game. Nashville's offense isn't anything to write home about, we need to be able to pop in 2 past Rinne and we'll have a good shot at winning.

Like the optimism, but there is no chance this team makes the playoffs. Too far behind (12 pts), too many teams to leap-frog (six), and too many loser points being won on a nightly basis. On top of all that, this team hasn't exactly displayed consistency game-to-game. If past few seasons are any indication, we'd need at least 90 pts in order to sniff the postseason -- at the moment, that means 52 out of 80 remaining available points. Roughly 26-14 (or with two OT/SO losses for every fewer win) down the stretch. Not going to happen.
Well... hope is the only thing we have left! So we can very well stick to it! (one could also argue that we could hope for Yakupov, but i don't want to think about it... yet!)

If the Isles win today, Ottawa beat the Jets, and Detroit beats Buffalo, then my optimism will be greater.
The teams the Isles must worry about are Buffalo, Winnipeg, Toronto, Pittsburgh, and Washington/Florida.
Basically, Montreal, Tampa, and Carolina have been playing like crap and they have all played at least two more games than the Isles. I personally don't see them being a factor.
Even better, if the Isles win again, Ottawa beats Toronto tomorrow, NJ beats Winnipeg, and the Hurricanes beat Pittsburgh (because the Canes have played more games), that would be great!
I don't think the Islanders will make the playoffs this year. They have a habit of getting into bad streaks and many of the teams above them would have to take a big dump.
I do think the Islanders will climb up in the standings, hurting any chances for the top pick in the draft. I can see the Islanders ending up better then 8-10 teams.

And that is my pre-game optimism warm up.
This is always fun to think about and why we as fans root for them to at least be in the thick of it for as long as possible. But the numbers are stacked against us. The problem with your thinking is we need so much to happen our way on a nightly basis in regards to other teams losing and not getting loser points AND to go on our own consistent winning tear that this team hasn't seen in at least 5 years.
Mathematically, still possible. Realistically, not. This team isn't a perennial playoff team that just got off to a bad start. We are getting a little better each year, at least when thinking about the core.
I forgot that Jack Hillen plays for the Preds...there's another brilliant move by Garf. If you know you're not going to re-sign a guy then why not trade him for at least a draft pick, even if it's a high rounder?
But even better, why not re-sign him when Martinek and Gervais are also leaving?
I know Jack didn't have his best season last year but he can't possibly be worse than Eaton or Mottau this year.

If I recall the situation, Snow wanted to sign Hillan to a two-way contract, Hillan wanted a one-way, so he walked away from the Islanders offer. In the end, Hillan signed a two-way contract with the Preds anyway.
Got the Preds feed today. Terry Crisp is the color man for the Preds and the announcer refered to him as the original Islander. I remember going to see the Islanders practice in Kings Park their first year and Terry Crisp was hysterical. He was really interacting with the fans and was a good early ambassador for a team trying to get fans in a predominantly Ranger area.
