EXACTLY. This is the heart of the issue. Plain and simple. Massive amounts of respect lost for Thomas today.

Maybe he doesn't respect the US government either.

I sure don't.

I wouldn't lose any respect for anyone over this. If anything, props for having the audacity to do this. Most players wouldn't have the balls to do it.

Several athletes have declined to go in the past. This has been going on for a while.

haha I don't get "pumped" for hockey games besides Ranger games. I'll definitely be flipping between that and American Pickers.

No problems with what Thomas did, and I have to imagine the Bruins aren't too upset with it either choosing not to mandate Thomas to go, or suspending him for not going.

as far as im concerned, Tim Thomas is an epic ******. Period. I would shake hands with George W. Bush if I had the opportunity. I still think he's the worst president this country has ever had, but I'd shake his hand. He's the President for christ sake. Show some class.

I agree his upside was always overhyped, but it sickens me seeing NHL teams completely ruin young players careers by developing them improperly.

Zip with some good tweets on the subject of Thomas:

Forget politics. Respect the invite and this country and it's history. RT @94Nyr: @stevezipay @mjdevito77 That because you support Obama

This too RT @CC_927: @stevezipay Should at least have the decency to respect teammates; their day now been overshadowed by the situation.

It takes more balls to actually look him in the eye and shake his hand while disagreeing with him. Hiding behind a statement and not showing up takes no balls whatsoever.

Showing up, shaking his hand, and telling him that he's wrong would be thoroughly unprofessional. Abstaining meant that the reporting of the event became politicized. Doing that would turn the event itself into a circus.

Disagree - if he did that, no one would have anything to write about today. The fact that he did it this way actually brought about some publicity to what the guy believes. And he's right - the founding fathers are probably rolling over in their graves at the travesty the U.S. Constitution has become.

I'd love to see the reactions if Thomas had refused an invite from the last administration.

He probably wouldn't have.

Either way, I think making it political is a bush league move. I'm sure he's not the only non-liberal on the Bruins.

Anyway this is getting way too political and we know how that ends up here, so I think we should all forget it.

He is the only American on the Bruins.

In any event, we're avoiding making this political. The entire situation is unfortunate and (Thank heavens) irrelevant to the Rangers. I hope that if we someday win the cup regardless of who is in office we wont have our meeting disturbed like this.

I never said he should voice his opinion and your opinion that he's "wrong" is telling here but I shouldn't assume. It never should've been politicized. And what exactly is he abstaining from? Showing up there isn't some admission of acceptance. Say thanks and move on.
