Sorry but....how about THIS year, it won't take 92 points since the conference is so weak? At this point, you might very well be witnessing a Sens and Leafs descent like you've never seen it before. Then there's the Washington-Florida battle and Winnipeg. Is it too far fetched to think that even in struggles, we might very well be a little better than those teams? Maybe not the Sens from the start of the year but now...it doesn't look at all like the same team. TBay is on a roll, yet 1 point behind us but 2 games in hand. But can they win more than us with the goalies they have?

Frankly, we should stop with those 92-94 points goal....it might very well just take 88 points just like in 2009-2010.

Just ****ing win. Get within 4 points by the deadline. Acquire Andrei Markov at trade deadline. Continue winning. Acquire Brian Gionta in mid-April. Boom, see ya Rangers.

Well, right now Toronto and Washington are on pace for 91, Ottawa for 90. It's possible two of these teams slump badly. To end up at 87 points:

Toronto 11-12-3
Washington 12-13-2
Ottawa 10-11-3

...or equivalent... plus none of the rest of the pack chasing getting hot enough to hit 88. It's unlikely, but possible. Here's hoping!

- the current 8th place team is on pace for 91 points

- since the lockout, in the East conference, the 8th place team's points: 92, 92, 94, 93, 88, 93

...so it could take less than 92, but that would be an abberation. I don't mean the 92 number to bring pessimism, just to have a goal. Ignore it if you'd like. Sorry to bring an argument to a positive thread.

I will start believing again at 8 wins in a row, but what we have seen in the last games from the team is encouraging

All valid points, just worth noting that every team in the lower half of the Eastern Conference is trying their ****ing hardest to NOT make the playoffs. TOR, FLA, OTT, PIT and WSH are going to win at a lower clip than their first half games which you can see in TOR, OTT and FLA already. NYI and CAR are not going to make it. BUF, MTL, TBL and WPG are trying but all have huge weaknesses.

It's a crapshoot!

It's not a number it's a range
88-95 in any given year

And the sad truth is, short of going on one hellacious tear the habs will need help from others to make it

At last someone else scoffs at the artificial numbers! I look at the teams that are competing with the Habs and I say, "Really?"

It looks like the red sea is parting for the Habs tonight.

Washington lost in regulation, Florida beat the Isles, and Pittsburgh is beating tampa 4-2.

I'm officially back on the believe bandwagon.

Exactly. Nobody will convince me that the Leafs, Sens, Jets, or Panthers are any better than the Habs. I know they're ahead in the standings. But I watch those teams head-to-head with us, and there's just no way. The standings are the ultimate arbiter. But this isn't just 1 team getting points over its head and holding a playoff spot, it's *three*. You don't need all 3 of them to slump for the 88 pt-8th-place scenario to materialize.

If the Habs go 18-6-2 or whatever it is that breaks the nominal 92-94 pt barrier, great, then it removes all doubt.

But it's just worth remembering that maybe 14-10-2 sneaks you in there too. Maybe. This potentially being a "special" year.

If we can win a good portion of our games against Toronto, Ottawa, Washington and Florida there is a chance we can make it to the playoffs with something like 15-11-0, 16-10-0 etc.. obviously a steep hill to climb but we definitely still have a chance.

We should enjoy the fact this season is not lost, and we should still watch the games with hope and passion.
