The only people who thought he was going to swoop in and lead this franchise to the promised land in his first few seasons obviously didnt follow the team or know about the surrounding players hes had to play with over the past few years (and im not talking about his linemates, I like Moulson, Parenteau and now Okposo, i mean the teams bad defense and revolving door goalie situation)

IMO hes come as advertised and BETTER than what I was expecting... which would mean I guess he'd be underrated in my book (not top-3, or even top 10, 20 etc, but certainly not overrated... of course again which is simply just IMO)

You're certainly right in that Stamkos has had a bigger impact, but hes also playing with premeire offensive talent in their own right as well... St. Louis and Lecavieler (SP) are or at least were elite players (in some peoples minds). Nothing against his linemates, but put JT with them and I think you'd see monstrous numbers as well
The Islanders fan doth protest too much, methinks!

I think he is over-rated in the sense that he isn't the second-coming of Gretzky that he was touted to be coming into the draft(ok, a bit of an over statement but not too much.) He was talked about like a guy that was a lock to be one of the top 15 players of all time.

But with that said, I don't think he's currently over-rated because he doesn't really get that much national attention like he used to. Also he is still developing and will become a scary player. But a GOAT-esque player, I don't see that.

I'm sorry, but to anyone who says Thomas is overrated and/or i not that good...are you serious? Even a habs fan will tell you he's the best we have seen in the last 4 years.

Overrated
Luongo
Green
Karlsson (great season, but has yet to show signs of a complete defenceman)

Underrated
David Desharnais (practically unknown to non-Montreal fans)
Mikko Koivu
Keith Yandle

I could honestly make a list of 50 underrated guys.

It pains me to say this but I think that Kessel and Phaneuf have such a bad rep here that they've actually become underrated. Guys like Heatley and to a lesser extent, Nash, I can buy (although put Nash on a good team with a real #1 playmaking center and I think he's still money for 40 goals). Their numbers simply haven't aligned with their past reputation for some time now. But Kessel and Phaneuf are both having very solid (and fantastic in PK's case) years. It's like people want to degrade Kessel automatically for being part of a trade which appears like it may eventually (it's not yet btw although I would agree it will be) be quite lop-sided in Boston's favor. That's not Kessel's fault.

LOL at the person who thinks Tavares is overrated. He has surpassed my expectations in only his 3rd year. He is THE BEST PLAYER on the entire ice in pretty much every game he has played this year.

Too lazy to come up with 3 but I think that these two are very comparable as they came out of the same draft:

Overrated: Doughty

Underrated: Pietrangelo

In the interest of starting a $***storm with my fellow Habs fans, I'm gonna say a lot of posters overrate Price. In his best season (10-11) he was a legit top 10, arguably top 5 goalie in the league. Every other season than that he hasn't been.

I still do think he will be a very good goalie.

On the flipside, Quick is very underrated. In fairness, he's about a year and a half older than (Jan 86 vs Aug 87) Price so we'll see where they both are in a season or two.

Overrated - Lundqvist's good looks. I think half the posters here would turn gay for him.

I remember a few years before the draft he was touted to be the "Next Crosby" (or at least I saw it once)... He isnt quite at that level, but right before the draft noone was calling him that. If they were there wouldnt have even been a discussion between him, Duchene and Hedman (unless they were supposed to the be next Lemieux and Potvin respectively... which they werent)

And the other guy already admitted he doesnt watch Isles games and thinks hes overrated because he isnt on big commercials or the cover of ESPN... so im content with my stance

Why does everyone keep saying Lecavalier is overrated..? I mean he doesnt live up to his contract but everyone already knows this.. thats why his contract is considered bad.

I agree with this. Most fans realize that Lecavalier is not worth his contract and has no value whatsoever. He's not over-rated at all. He's just worthless.

In general any team with a large fan base's players get over rated. Any team with a smaller fan base has some underrated players.

Also any prospect on a team with a large fan base normally gets way over hyped by their own fan base.

I actually think someone like Bogosian gets underrated because he struggled early on and doesn't have overly impressive numbers yet.
