So it is true (MSG quiets the crowd noise)

And why?

I mean, no disrespect to the Predators, but at first, I was caught off-guard to the Garden rocking on a Tuesday night against Nashville. I loved it! I didn't have a problem listening to the commentary while the crowd was roaring...or moaning (Double-minor to Gabby).

What's with MSG quieting the crowd noise?

Well, when you think about it, everyone quiets the crowd noise, MSG just does it more then others.

From some of the comments in the GDT as well as noticing that it was weird to hear the Garden be that loud today.

When games were on Versus, I just thought that was the case because we were playing divisional rivals or playing for our playoff lives (Bruins).

Back in the days of Sportschannel, MSG used to have a much louder crowd volume then Jersey and the Isles games (all attendance jokes aside). Since the acquisition of those properties, it's 180'd, in that, MSG makes Ranger games sound tame.

Knowing today's society it probably has something to do with crowds starting A--hole or flyers suck, something along those lines is "too offensive" for todays television

That was the first thing I noticed last night. Not only the crowd, but the sounds of the game as well. Never really noticed it quite like that before.

I believe that's the original post's point.

That after watching games on MSG, then watching them on another network, the noise reduction on MSG is apparent.

MSG does use a lot of noise reduction.

NBC didn't last night, and it made the viewing experience more fun. Hearing the crowd.

Anyone notice that when games are on MSG 2 the crowd/ice noise is MUCH louder? Perhaps it has to do with the sound mixing? MSG/MSG+ games have a Dolby 5.1 mix where MSG 2 games are stereo only.

On NBC sports net, it only sounded like it was stereo, not surround.

It was broadcasted in Dolby 5.1, unlike MSG 2 games, but I don't think they actually used the surround channels.

I thought it was common knowledge that MSG dampens crowd noise more than others? I've seen this come up at least a couple times a year since I've joined on here. It's definitely what they do, I'm not sure why though.

I had Dolby Digital on my amplifier, but nothing was coming out of my surround speakers.

Games on MSG are definitely quieter in terms of crowd nice so that the announcers can be clearly heard. No disrespect to Sam Rosen, but give me the crowd noise!

could it be as simple as more mics ? Perhaps NBC mics the ice more or differently than MSG does.

I know some folks who have done audio for the NFL before and the tech crews mic the games differently form time to time

I was at the game in 102.. I couldn't believe how the Garden was rocking on a late Tuesday night game vs. Nashville. I also went to the 5-1 rout of the Panthers earlier this year and you could hear a pin drop. It's weird how certain games seem like a full house with the Garden rocking and others not so much. Very entertaining game last night too.. MSG definitely needs to turn up the noise on their broadcasts!

This is probably closer to the truth. When NBC Sports (fomerly VS) does a game they come in with a crew, trucks, equipment, etc. Because that is "THE" game that night they may have more cams, more mics, etc.

MSG does how many games a yr? I'm not saying they wouldn't benefit from more mics or cams or whatever, but sometimes it's just not in the budget... especially if you're spending that money on new sets, or other technology.

I'd be surpreised if they were spending money to dampen anything.

I was at the game last night. Call me shocked (happily) that the Garden was sold out against Nashville. The Gardenn was ROCKING last night like a playoff game. It was incredible. So what you heard on NBC was legit, MSG does drown out crowd noise.

They mic up the garden well though.. I have NHL center ice and i'll watch some other games and there are certain places where they hage a mic on the glass and some a-hole fan will sit there pounding on the glass and that's all you'll hear heh

Rangers broadcasting has spoiled me, you don't realize how good it is till you watch other teams.

I noticed that too. I like hearing the slap of the puck against sticks on tape to tape passes.

A tiny bit off topic but did anyone else who was at the game yesterday feel like the speakers were turned down a bit? When the Rangers scored I barely heard the goal horn or the goal song. The first goal was borderline awkward because no one really knew when to start yelling "go-o-oal." A lot of the music and other stuff seemed quieter than usual too. The guy in front of me said the same thing, I just wanna make sure we're not crazy.
