The Columbus Blue Jackets announced Thursday that defenseman Radek Martinek will miss the remainder of the season due to post-concussion symptoms and that the club has signed defenseman Brett Lebda to a one-year contract.
Martinek, 35, scored one goal in seven games with Columbus this season before suffering a concussion in a game at Detroit on Oct. 21 that has sidelined him for the past 39 games. Signed by the club as a free agent last July, he has 22 goals, 104 points and 272 penalty minutes in 460 games with the Blue Jackets and New York Islanders.
I love how a lot of Islanders fans love to Kick Radek when he is down. the guy was a solid player for us and played his butt off.
definitely one of the unsung islanders of all time.
instead of "sad" and "predictable" how about some well wishes?

I think the sad covered it. It think it's awful that a guy who obviously could have been one of the all-time great depth defensemen couldn't stay healthy enough to do so.
But at the same time, it was guaranteed that he'd go down to injury at least once a season.
A friend of mine made an interesting point between Radek and DP
If Dipietro had Martinek's contract no one would really bash him as bad. We feel bad for Radek because he was always professional and tried but never could stay healthy.
Now give Radek a 15 yr deal and believe me he would be hated.

Nah....Radek was very good. He just got hurt a lot. The team always had a better record when he was in the lineup. Radek wasn't a maroon out there. Radek only needed one seat on the airline. Radek could take a punch. Radek's injuries weren't chronic.....he got a shoulder, concussion, breaks, you name it, not a series of chronic injuries that were connected.
If Radek were signed for a seven year deal and DP were signed for a seven year deal....more reasonable......I'd be happier with Radek.
I think perhaps he just lacks the musculature/mass he needed to play the game the way he does. (DP's bonus addition of muscle in rapid time probably is what did him in.....and could, ahem, be why his cheekbone was so brittle, maybe, just speculating)

i dont think i would like dipietro regardless of his contract situation. Radek, on the other hand, seems like a good guy.

This is often overlooked, but I think it's truly the reason for the downfall of Rick DiPietro. He was about 6'0'' 210 lbs around the start of his injuries. The parts of his body where he added the muscle was too much upper body bulk for an athletic goalie like Rick.
