Meh... doubt it. Reach is huge, particularly when you're fighting on skates on ice and players can pretty easily keep you at arms' length. Gerbe's got heart, but I don't want to see him start fighting with regularity. He'd get pummeled.

He would also intentionally take penalties to get under other player's skin and keep his image around the league alive.
Whether they're overrated or not is irrelevant because to an extent they are effective. For Gerbe to stay in the league he has to play like this, Marchand too. Yes, some agitators cross the line but I have yet to see Gerbe go over the line.

Then he has less of an excuse than Avery for this behavior. Still chirps like Avery with the same intentions.

And his "little spear"?? It was a slash. There was absolutely no spearing motion in that at all.
Ok, little slash.

Because that's how he plays? His game got him into the NHL, I dont believe he should change it because you dislike his chirping.

of the 20 starters for the sabres, gerbe is one of about 5 guys who i hope is still with the team in 2 years. guy has a lot of heart, and leaves it all on the ice. hard not to love him.

A very misleading thread title, although it's cool it started a discussion about Gerbe. Dude, Wheeler touched his head, big deal.

Both could easily retain NHL jobs. Guys like Kaleta at least have an excuse for playing this role as they would have trouble keeping their NHL jobs, but Gerbe and Marchand have broken into the NHL and their jobs are secure at the moment. Gerbe isn't as bad as most agitators, but I really want this role out of hockey. Unfortunately these players are thriving and almost every team has one.

Whether we like it or not that role serves a purpose and it's part of the game now. I doubt they will be able to take it out.

They each whacked each other with their sticks before this video kicks in, I believe, but I can't for the life of me remember who started it -- my memory is that Gerbe gave Wheeler a little tap on the leg and Wheeler thwacked him, then the video you see here kicks in -- but it might have been the other way around. They showed a longer replay at the game of the full exchange.

Love Gerbe. I don't regularly watch Sabres games but in the few times I have this year, he's been one of the few players showing any resemblance to having a heart and a desire to win. He has to battle extremely hard game in and game out against bigger players with better reach. Even if he is chippy, how can you not admire that?

I see a lot of what Fleury talks about in his book in Gerbe's game and I think it's a fair point. Fleury repeatedly talked about how he knew if he didn't play with an edge and play with some chippiness then players would absolutely walk all over him because of his size. He had to play with tenacity and walk that fine line to make players think twice before taking a run at him. I see a lot of that in Gerbe's game as well.

Wow Boston's commentator is such a tool. He sounds so stupid in the beginning.

And I did this whole pet thing on a smaller player when I was in high school. Buddy got pissed at me.

Still working on this one myself. Seems like the OP was projecting a bit, ie: Wheeler pets Gerby; OP thinks he's like a little kid; combine the two.

Blake Wheeler is exactly the kind of person that would draw attention to and make light of something completely out of another person's control.

I hear Gerbe can squat like 800 lbs, the kid is an absolute beast in the weight room. Combine that with leverage and you have a feisty little monster. Compare him to someone like Roy/Stafford, who goes out and parties every night. (I have friends who see them in the bars every night) I'd rather have a hardworking midget gerbe anyday!

And you think they're useless when almost every team has one?

If Wheeler had Gerbe's hear and drive then you'd have one heck of a player.
