I back George in these 2 moves fully. My only fear is how much the game is changed relative to what Dale brought as a player, but still at the end of the day, its still hockey basics that get things done. And more importantly, hearing the voice that is preaching it.

All hail the new king

Wonder what kind of reactions, if any, we'll get from players...

I was kind of hoping Carlyle would go first and we could snatch him up.

Same here.

Bruce needed to go, but Dale Hunter seems like a lateral, at best (system/strategy-wise).

Yep. I'm guessing it'd be tough to bring in a guy with experience and slide Hunter down to an assistant during the season now (it would look terrible of course).

Oh well.

note that GMGM has never hired a head coach with prior NHL coaching experience.

In an ideal world, Carlyle would be out and available, but Hunter is a legacy and I think that had increasingly become important. Hunter's stock had been rising to the point that he was going to take the next coaching offer from the NHL.

Heard behind the scenes that the subject was broached last year during the skid, whatever the public denials suggest. Groundwork had been laid, even if they pulled back from the ledge last year. I suspected that this time they would be going back to that well, just like a trade: Talks may lead to nothing at the time, but lay groundwork for future moves.

How Hunter will fare is impossible to answer. His teams do very well and he has developed some star NHL talent, but how much of that is owed to superior coaching, excellent management from brother Mark, or luck in drafting high, is difficult to parse. We'll see. They'll be no shrinking violets, that's for sure. Whatever the personnel, they'll show more moxie.

I hope that's the case (the moxie). If nothing else, make them worth watching, especially Ovi.

Would be nice if he could use his [brief] history with Carlson to get him going again, too. Caps need him not to suck in a big way.

mcphee gets an D- for handling this situation, this team lost 1 full year at least. lets move on, i guess hunter is the short term answer for now, if he manages to the playoffs and look good he will get another shot.

i am waiting for boudreaus comments for some laughs.

Pretty sure he also coached Wideman for a while. Should be interesting to see how this turns out - hopefully it gives the boys a real kick in the ass.

Change was despreately needed. Good first step. Now let's hope Dale kicks some of these guys in the ass. Time to wake up and earn your bloody pay checks!!

Edit: Time to start "A New Hope" thread for our new bench boss.

This should have been done during last offseason. At least George recognized his mistake and is trying to correct it, so I say better late than never. I see this move as low risk, because our team has looked horribly inconsistent, the players look lost, primed for another early exit yet again. Ovi doesn't seem to care anymore, the rest just follow. Something had to be done. Even Bruce's biggest cheerleaders cannot overlook the warts on this team, and culminated by losing in the playoffs to lower seeds.

I hope George allows him to get an assistant in asap, the ones here are largely useless at this point. Their voices were not heard either, or they were incompetent.

not sure why people think all of a sudden the sullen crowd are going to start playing hard. if anything, it seems perfectly reasonable to assume they'd push back even harder. nothing about hunter suggests he's a good coach for a team like this.

makes me nervous. hope my gut is wrong on this one.

Kind of odd to say about the fastest ever coach to 200 wins, but BB had to go.

Well, no matter what happens, this should be entertaining.

I wonder where BB will land...

As many have noted, mid-season there are limited options when making a change, especially when bringing someone in from 'outside' the organization. Not so easy to get a coach who is employed mid-season whether an Asst coach at NHL level or Asst coach or head coach at another level. Hunterís situation in London offers him the flexibility to take this job that others donít have; of course this isnít the first time Hunter has been linked (more than linked now) to talk about a Caps coaching replacement either.

Thought it was telling that all 3 Hunterís (Dale, Mark, Dylan) were behind the bench coaching London in yesterdayís game.

As to Hunter coaching in the NHL and this group jumping from the OHL to the NHL, especially given his on ice and off ice demeanor, going to be interesting to watch.

I wish we could have traded BB for Carlyle. I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up there.

That said, this needed to be done. Hunter won't let the divas rule the room. They can't fire or trade Ovechkin, so hopefully this will get OBS off their collective arses. While the BB fans in the room might be disappointed, I would think any North American player would like this.

BB: "I don't know how to coach toughness"

Enter 32, stage right.

Had to be done. Surprised GMGM had the nads to make this move.

Evason and Woods need to go as well, I hope Dale brings in his own folks.

How do things usually shake out for assistant coaches in situations like this? Is it up to the new head coach to decide to keep them or go with someone else?

Why is that? I guess given that we haven't watched him coach personally and many of us haven't seen his teams play much (if at all) you could say that. Or are you looking at him as a gritty, tough ex-player and assuming he's dumb as rocks and cannot employ a strategy?
