You guys bring up all these excuses about ownership, Lou, and not having confidence in him. Why would he sign with all those unknowns?? Parise should have been signed before his knee injury, he can't be happy about that. I actually feel your pain because Buffalo dealt with the same BS about ownership in the past. One thing I will tell you is that this situation stinks of losing the player. We finally learned and got something for Campbell.
The only thing that would effect him wanting to stay is the financial stability of the franchise. It's a very valid concern, and honestly if he doesn't want to come back that would be the #1 reason why.

Value in terms of dollars and cents isn't the problem. Lou pulled out all the stops in order to retain Kovalchuk, circumventing the cap and giving him more money than anyone in the history of the Devils - if he was willing to do that for a guy he had on his team for 3 months, why WOULDN'T he do it for his captain? Lou always makes competitive offers for guys he wants to keep - see S. Niedermayer (who they offered cap max at the time) and Elias for other examples.

Lou isn't dumb, he knows what Zach means to the team. He'll make every effort to re-sign him at the proper time, IF HE CAN of course. If Vanderbeek pulls the plug at the last second a la Larry Quinn/Chris Drury then I don't know what you can do about it. Salary and contract length are pretty inconsequential to be honest, it's all a matter of being given the resources to get the job done.

But in terms of value, I would ask for Leopold + Kassian + 1st.

Devils fans would probably ask for more and Sabres would offer less, but I think this is a fair package.
If the Sabres were in the playoff mix and the 1st was in the 20s, I'd reluctantly do that deal.

The toughest part to swallow would be giving up Leopold as I'd want him in the playoffs.

But, since the Sabres are out of the playoffs, it makes no sense to add Parise now.

The smart play is waiting until late June and trying to get his UFA rights to talk to him prior to 7/1 if the Devils can't get him signed to an extension.
