Blair Betts skating

http://www.timesherald.com/article/2...TS03/120119668

Quote:
VOORHEES, N.J. — Blair Betts has a locker again in the Flyers locker room.

That might not mean much, especially since Betts is still close to a month away from any decision being made if he can return from a debilitating knee injury, but it could also mean a lot.

Follow the logic:
Betts, who has been on the long-term injury list since early October after he was returned to the Flyers following a failing of a physical in Montreal when the Canadiens claimed him off waivers, has been skating for about a week on his own (he was actually joined by rehabbing Phantoms defenseman Oskars Bartulis Monday).

Betts still has several hurdles to jump before he would be medically cleared to play hockey again, but he just might be a post-trade deadline option for the Flyers.

“My conditioning has improved, but my knee still feels the same,” Betts said. “I’m slowly trying to get used to being back on the ice. Mentally it’s been the biggest factor to just change the monotony of being upstairs in the weight room every day.”

Betts said he hasn’t spoken to general manager Paul Holmgren recently, but that he intended to soon.

“I plan on playing this year,” Betts said before adding that he wants to play for the Flyers. “They’ve given me as much time as I’ve needed or wanted to see if I can get myself as healthy as possible and that’s all I’ve ever asked for.”

VOORHEES — Bet on Blair Betts playing hockey again this season ... at your own risk.

Whether it be for the Flyers or some other NHL team, the 31-year-old center with a bad knee made it clear on Monday that he wants back before this campaign comes to an end.

A source in the organization said something should be resolved in the vicinity of the Feb. 27 NHL trade deadline.

Betts was thought to be a goner on Oct. 5 when he was claimed off waivers by Montreal. But four days later, after being examined by Canadiens doctors, Betts was ordered returned to the Flyers by none other than NHL commissioner Gary Bettman because of a failed physical.

Since then, Betts has been sort of the phantom (and, no, not Adirondack) of the Flyers' locker room. He hasn't played a minute of NHL hockey and the word was that his knee would never allow a return.

But Betts never gave up. After being land-bound for months, he's now been back on the ice for a couple weeks and sounds like he wants to get back in the game.
What do you guys think? Do we see him in a flyers uniform this season? Could we use him?

If he can come back and be the face off man he's been In the past, I'd have to say try and make it work.

I also saw on twitter earlier that he isn't stopping hard or cutting so I think he still is ways off from being back

I saw this as well. I would assume r is still a ways from coming back, but he did claim in the article that he plans to play this season, so I'd have to wonder if maybe he's closer than we think.

I think he'd be an upgrade at 4th line center, and perhaps move couturier to the wing on one of the top 3 lines.

Maybe something like

Hartnell-Giroux-Jagr
Simmonds-Schenn-JVR (this line was looking great together)
Voracek-Briere-Couturier/Read
Talbot-Betts-Read/Couturier

I don't remember the exact numbers cause I looked them up a while ago but he was never anything more then average on face offs. Idk, he's kinda slow but is a good PKer so maybe. But If he just started skating and still can't go all the way it will be a while still so who knows.

Betts is slower then hell at this point.. Right now the Flyers have a young and fast 4th line. Put Betts down there and he'd absolutely kill it.

In your first post you implied Betts was better then Harry Z and Rinaldo based on the way the greater than sign was facing.

We could use Betts leadership skills and above average defense out there instead of Harry Z. Harry is young that and should be on the team next season.

How badly hurt is he? The Flyers tried to waive him which you can't do with an injured player, yet all this time he hasn't been playing?

A healthy Betts is better than both defense and can PK.

The Blair Betts of 2-3 years ago was, but now I don't think so. He's just to worn down and slow to be effective.

That's why I said "healthy." If he can get back to 100% he can be fine. He's not horrendously old. I'm not convinced he can get completely healthy though.

Our GM and coaches came to the conclusion that an (almost) healthy Betts was of no use for this team at the begin of the season.
Now some people on this board try to argue that the same Betts minus one healthy knee can be a usefull asset...what?!

I am sure he will be waived... we barely have room on the team for the players we have.

I would give Bettsy a few games. We have over 4M in cap room.
Why not? He was playing well for us. Always gave 100%.

Send him to AHL 1st for conditioning best way to know if he is ready to go.

I didn't approve of the waiving, it seemed strange to waive pretty much the only proven defensive forward we had except for Talbot. It's been a slightly weird situation. He plays in the last pre-season game, but suddenly has to sit out (almost?) the entire season after failing a medical in Montreal.

He's been out for a long time, if he's healthy enough to return to the team I doubt he's that much of an improvement, if any, over guys like Scrabbles or Rinaldo at this point. That fourth line could use some defensive stability though.

Hopefully for Betts he can get a few games, either here or with some other team, to earn himself a contract for next season.

Everyone likes Sestito, Rinaldo or Harry. I do too but how many shots did they block this season. Someone like Bryzgalov should be screaming for Betts to come back and play. Betts will not destroy you with a hit along the boards but he may win a faceoff and block a crucial shot. We also know that he could play on PK and brings solid work ethic.

So once again, if he is healthy give him a few games. Plus he only makes 700K for crying out loud.

It sounds to me like he hasnt received any medical treatment for the knee and has just been taking it easy to see if it'll heal?

They don't work that way...I tore my ACL 6 years ago (Not clean through, partial tear) and my doctor and knee specialist ordered me rest, take it easy for 4 months then rehab. It's still torn to this day, worse then before and no amount of rest will fix that, Surgery is coming up soon to finally fix the stupid thing.

I imagine that what ever is going on in Betts knee will not just heal itself.

Am i missing something here?

If he gets back to 100% that could be pretty nice come playoff time. Is there a deadline that he has to be active in order to be on the playoff roster, or theoretically could he be LTIR'd until game 1 of the playoffs?
