Ponikarovsky to New Jersey for a 4th/Joe Sova

Chip Alexander @ice_chip
Canes have traded Alexei Ponikarovsky to New Jersey.

Chip Alexander @ice_chip
The trade is for a fourth-round draft pick in 2012 and defenseman Joe Sova.

Not quite 3rd period Cammalleri, but that's random.

Okay?

I guess this can open things up for Dadonov.

didn't see that... what's the report on Sova? Didn't expect much for Poni, but we did get smaller

Sova, 23, is 6-3 and 195 pounds. Signed by Devils as free agent in March after playing three years at Alaska-Fairbanks.

Sounds like he's probably nothing more than just a contract off the books.

He was demoted to the 4th line part way through the game. Funny that JR's two Cole replacements (Stewart and Poni) ended up on the 4th line.

Poni had a really weird season. Seemed to always be in the right spot to score some goals, but then would never score. He was also the softest 6'4" guy I think I've ever seen. Overall, a major disappointment and the fact that we got anything for him is good.

I did a lot of looking into Joe Sova for a keeper league where we do UDFA and College signings here at HF and was one of many teams that had bid on him, as an aside. He is a legit prospect and by no means a "throw in" in my estimation.

He was highly sought after when the Devils signed him out of Alaska-Fairbanks after his Junior season there. He's a puck moving defender first and foremost and projects to have a pretty high offensive ceiling. Really stoked about getting him in the system.

I just did some quick reading about him, and most seem to think he will make the NHL... I'm just stumped by more defense men in our system... With Murph and Dumo coming into it soon, and Faulk and McBain up already... I wonder if this means the end for Sangs?

Wow, two good trades in a couple of days for JR. Hopefully Dwyer or Nodl moves down to the 4th line and Dadonov gets top 9 time to start.

Either that or Larose is back...

I think Bobby Sanguinetti will be back if he wants to be back, but I would bet he moves on to another team or gets picked up through waivers next season. Somebody will take a chance.

We have some veterans in the AHL that can sit or move on. Roy is one of them. Bellemore likely another. Plus, it wouldn't shock me if Justin Kreuger went back to Europe considering he was at one point a healthy scratch this season after being highly touted coming into the season and expected to contend for a roster spot almost immediately. Rissanen is run of the mill in my estimation.

With the exception of Michal Jordan and Sanguinetti, I don't see anybody down there with NHL upside except Sova now. Room in the AHL will be plentiful even next season. Murphy can't play there, Faulk won't be there, Dumoulin may be down there unless he decides to play his Senior season. Mark Alt probably stays in school for another year. Danny Biega may come out. Austin Levi could be down there unless he has his OA season available and we feel like letting him develop down there. I think we'll be alright.

This opens a spot for LaRose without sending back the weekly Checkers tryouts.

I hope we at least attempt to move Sanguinetti, even as an addition in another deal, rather than lose him to waivers next year.

Sova, interesting. Can't say I've seen him play for Fairbanks or Albany. He was fairly highly sought after from Fairbanks though.

Shame Poni didn't work out here. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy. But that doesn't put pucks in the net.

What does this do to our cap? Are we under the floor with this move?

Seems like a bigger deal might be in the works?

Cap hit is calculated by the amount of money that a team spends over the duration of the season, not where they sit at any one point in the season, except the start of the season unless I am mistaken. According to JR's calculations, this is a move we could afford to make at this point in the year with the money we've already spent towards reaching the cap floor. With the season being halfway over or better, we should start seeing more of these moves.
