If I have to summarize the season ...

... then I'll take the last two games as an example.

Those two games illustrate Habs season.

vs Capitals:
- Horrible in PP
- Shutout
- Loss at home
- Outshoot the opponent

vs Penguins:
- Can't protect the lead
- Lose in shootout
- Cole is great
- Subban looks good, but make mistakes
- Inefficient in PP

Our season is like an infinite loop of those happenings.

Seems like we can't catch a break at all...oh well looking forward to next season if we can snatch a decent pick

Edit - knowing our luck though Habs will make a comeback and miss 8th to Toronto with the same number of points.

It's laughable at this point. Really.

Pretty much that.
It's why it's so frustrating. It's like watching 3 different games in an infinite loop. It's getting old.

That and the call on the Pittsburgh OT loss(no whistle) are the season in a nutshell.

Sorry I can't worry about AK's broken stick when Scotty ****ing Gomez was the 3rd guy on the shootout.

And the fact that the game are lost by a one goal margin is not an excuse anymore. They play like they want to lose by 1 goal.

Montreal has had 26 shootout attempts this season and scored 4 goals. 2 of those were by Brian Gionta who is injured (4 shots). So the players dressed last night are 2/22 on the season.

Yesterday was Scott Gomez's first shot attempt of the season.

Scott Gomez was 6/19 career before last night.

Not a bad gamble IMO.

I understand this gamble perfectly well, however is the fact that Gomer hasn't scored in 50+ games factored in? Is the fact that he probably got those SO goals 2-3+ years ago factored in? We had plenty of other shooters who were hot that game liked Cole and Patches. There's really ultimately no excuse.

Why do Ovechkin and Gaborik, two of the NHL's best goal scorers suck at the shootout (this includes back when Ovy was scoring 60 goals)?

Why is one of the best shootout guys Jussi Jokinen? A guy with one 30 goal season in his career?

Pierre Dagenais was money in shootouts back when he was in the NHL, and this was a horrible, horrible hockey player.

The shootout and the game are totally different animals. Sure there are guys like Datsyuk who are great at both... but there really is little correlation between shoot skill and playing good hockey.

Thats why I absolutely hate ending a tie game with a skills competition.

All very valid points imo. But it's not just the fact of being a bad shooter in game. The guy hasn't scored in 50+ games, it's a matter of confidence at this point. You think he feels good playing so ****? He doesn't. I know for a fact he's got his heart in the right place cause if he didn't so many of the players wouldn't still back him up. He's obviously a good guy. But he lacks confidence right now, Cole and Pacioretty had scored goals and are also two of our premiere players. A slumping guy who isn't a shooter but who has had some past success got a try when he has zero confidence, over a guy like Patches or even Cole. I understand maybe Cunneyworth was praying Gomez would score and it would ignite him, but if we're serious about winning games here you can't put Gomez out on the shootout, not the way he's played this season.

I'm not saying he's looked terrible but he hasn't had any luck offensively. He needs to focus on getting his team up on the score sheet.

We aren't even that bad of a team. The boys just suck on the powerplay and in the shootout. Win half of the shootout games, we are a few mere points out of the playoffs. With even the 20th best PP in the league, we probably would have won 4-5 more games.

As far as everything else goes, we aren't a top club, but definitely a playoff team.

Basically it comes down to this. The Montreal Canadiens of 2011-2012 ... are not clutch.

That's it. And that's what makes it frustrating. Next season, put the same team on the ice, erase their memories of this season. 80% of chances they make the playoffs easily imo.

I agree, with minor changes we could be 5th or 6th in the conference. A lot of things have been "worse case scenario" this year. Price has not played up to his usual standards. Defense has struggled with Markov out. PP has not been anywhere close to usual(top 5). Plus SO and OT has cost us a lot of points.

That was weird....I knew we were in trouble when in the Bruins game the goal that hit the boards, came out in front, and Price had gone behind the net to get it...I think it was Caron who put it in the empty net, and that was our season in a nutshell, what could go wrong, has gone wrong...I know there is still time, but...

Timmins better get to work on the draft...

Totally, this is why I think the whole shakeup/kill all management/fire everyone/trade everyone movement does not work for me

Just Reap the nice top 5 pick, and let Gauthier continue his work

If I had to summurize the season it would be the sound of a loud fart. It has been horrible. the only redeeming value is the high pick
