That's actually a really good pick up for you guys. Yip has some nice offensive talent that he showed off in Colorado. I think he could do tell in Nashville.

Blast! you beat me to it.

Dont get this move unless Smithson is hurt worse than we think.

if I had unlimited cash would be cool to get a Yip jersey

It doesn't really replace Smithson though, as he's not really adequate defensively. He's another "has to be in the top six to succeed" guy according to Avs fans, but isn't good enough to justify such icetime.

maybe Craig Smith to MIL?

edit: Forgot Mueller was up, most likely scenario. And Smith wouldn't be sent down after being named a young star.

Scouting report from a COL fan:

Good speed

Has flashes of finish. OK, one flash so far in his career.

Sometimes it looks like he has no hands at all. Other times it seems he is to hockey sense what hellen keller is to the other senses.

In a bottom 6 role he can provide some energy and speed, but for a bottom 6 role we are talking about a guy that barely averaged a hit a game last year.

Expectations should be low for him. As they seem to be from those who have posted so far.

I really don't get this move. Nobody in Milwaukee was a better option?

This is a good pickup, Yip had 11 goals in his first 22 games but has fallen off after injury.

Trotz might be able to find that talent and add some depth to the line up which is not bad at all.

even worse, he's on a one way deal so we cant send him down if he doesnt pan out...

you have to wonder if this is someone we scouted, and poile saw something he liked, but wasnt going to trade for him so he told the Avs GM to put him on waivers...

Probably means Mueller about to head back down. Maybe we see Halischuk/Smith/Yip a few times.

A low risk move with only a slight chance of any improvement overall. He started his career hot, but has been off for the past season and a half. Maybe his former teammate Wilson can get him going in the right direction again.

Don't get this pick up at all. Unless someone is getting sent down... or we are packaging multiple players for a really good forward and need Yip to replace said pieces... smith better not get sent down.

not sure I have an opinion specifically on Yip, but if he's as advertised, remember, we're not really rolling a top and bottom 6, we're rolling 3 fairly balanced lines and the Smithson/McG line. So, if he's competent, it's not inconceivable to roll someone down to that line to skate with Smith (our ROY) and Hals (10 goals puts him in our top 5) or even put him there and have almost 4 lines that actually are a threat. I think most of us respect what Smithson brings as PK and face-off guy, but we may be at a point where we don't wanna' play that every night anymore.

and then he scored another 12 in like his next 89 games!

winner!

he had 4pts in the playoffs vs the Sharks, but he also was terrible in his own end and only was a + in one game of the playoffs. he was a −2 in both the last two games.

his 11 goals came from playing with good teammates and using his speed and size to get to the right spots. he then just finished what 90% of all NHLers could.

he continued to fail when given equal chances the next year and never recaptured that magic.

in terms of a waiver snag, i don't see the harm in giving it a shot.

but to think he might be a steal or find that 11 in 22 touch again is a pipe dream. imho.

I'm starting to think/hope it's this. Yip is a cheap UFA ($725k for the full season) and can't be a part of the team's future. Maybe a bottom sixer + 2nd for AK or something like that is in the works.

Tis the season for such maneuvers.

With Spaling going full-time, I think the need for Smithson is greatly diminished. Of course you have to do something with Smithson's contract next season, he could help someone rather than be our permascratch, not going to get much in return but a very late pick.

I think this may be the most likely explanation. Smithson's calling card is the PK which sucks this year. So if the PK is still crappy why not replace Smithson with someone who might actually score or set them up rather than saddle halischuk with Smithers

I thought that exactly what "PREDATORS HOCKEY" was, though.

Avs fan here. Basically this, I mean there is the remote chance he picks his game up, but he's been atrocious. Yip isn't meant for bottom 6 duties unless you guys are rolling 3 balanced lines. I wasn't a huge fan evennwhen he had his hot start, imo he's a flash in a pan. Hopefully he can prove me wrong and succeed.

I wish we could have seen more of Mueller. Oh well.

Yip is an interesting move. Maybe Poile wanted a bit more experience in the lineup rather than constantly bringing up rooks. Unless a trade is made that takes some depth out of the lineup, this is meh.

If it is a case of needing top six talent around him, this may be a great fit. Playing with Smith and Halischuck on the 4th line, he could be productive. From the reports, he likes to hang around the slot and smith and hali are two guys that put pucks on net. Maybe this is a better option than having smithson or mcgratton with them. Makes sense to me in that respect.

and before anyone lauds smithsons pking abilities, we have been doing fine without him. Him and cube can be permascratch vets.
