Rangers' Roster

If the Rangers were to step into the 2004-2005 season right now what would you want it to be? Include UFA's, prospects or even **REALISTIC** trades.

I would
Sign: Mikael Samuelsson, Steve Webb, and maybe Ron Francis
Lines are:

Lundmark- Francis- Jagr
Samuelsson- Nylander- Balej
Murray- Holik- Ortmeyer
Giroux- Moore- Webb

or

w/o Francis

Lundmark- Nylander- Jagr
Samuelsson- Betts- Balej
Murray- Holik- Ortmeyer
Giroux- Moore- Webb

The purpose of signing Francis would be just for leadership. Webb would add a tough guy to replace McCarthy, who apparently doesn't fight. Samuelsson would just add depth to a terribly weak LW...

opinions??

what would you do to the Rangers Roster if they had a season beginning in November?

Murray-Messier- Ortmeyer
Giroux- Betts-Strudwick/Whoever

I'd take a 41 yr old over a 43 yr old and Francis has played with Jagr. (that may be a bit irrelivant but still...)

Messier might be 2 years older but he has a lot more left in the tank and it makes no sense to dump the best leader in franchise history to try to get another.

Betts just hasn't played very much in the last two years (less than 40 games total). There was an article in the Hartford Curant recently about him and it was pretty clear that he needed to do a lot of work to get back into the grove. He also sounded like he was really pressing because he was trying to impress his new coaches too. Give him a little time to get comfortable and hopefully he will respond well.

Don't forget the lottery. It's not that easy to get Crosby, even if (and that's a big if) the Rangers would really tank the season.

Actually, I like the Francis idea. Messier would be a "good" choice as well.

Sign: Rucinsky, Messier / Francis, Klemm

Lundmark - Nylander - Jagr
Rucinsky - Messier / Francis - Balej
Murray - Holik - Ortmeyer
Giroux / Wiseman - Betts - Strudwick / Marshall

Poti - Klemm
Tyutin - Kasparaitis
Pck - Rachunek

Weekes - Dunham

Still a lot of Rookies in the line-up, but a team that IMO wouldn't get blown away every night.

I can't even begin to think...

about the Rangers' roster at this point. Perhaps we should start thinking of the 2005-2006 season roster instead, when guys hopefully will be graduating from their current status and possibly playing with the big club, or some youngsters will have another season under their belt to make a positive impression.

Even with the roster we have now, without any FA additions, I doubt we'd finish below Washington. Even with a few key FA signings, we'll still finish bottom 5 for sure so what's there to worry about. We're gonna get a great player regardless.

Even though it's been asked ad nauseum, I do wonder what'll they'll do about the draft if there isn't a season. IMO it's not fair to keep the same rank as last year but with a new lottery because a team like Phoenix would definately place much higher if there were a season. I think they ought to just postpone the draft and have a "super-draft" in '06.

sjb...

there is no fair way to conduct the draft next season. The closest thing to a fair way is to do the same as last season, and perhaps re-jigger the lottery (meaning, pick another ball for the top 5 teams to get another chance). Of course, we all would presume that the Rangers could fall into the top 5 if there was a season, with Phoenix climbing out. But then again, you never really know. So like I started out, if there is no season, there is absolutely no way to conduct a draft fairly.

Gotta agree I'd rather have Messier back than bring in a Francis as a 1yr merc. Good call ortmeyer on signing mcgillis. If things come back with no hard cap I'd sign him or another big d-man to take the pressure of the younger guys. But I'm thinking I'd rather have see Labarbera stay in Hartford to provide experience and stability and maybe gain some trade value instead of bringing him up to the NHL and completely exposing him. I'd leave him down there and use valiquette with the big club at least until blackburn can take over the everyday job with the Pack.

Yep, it would have been a lot easier to simply post this link:

http://www.geocities.com/floridapant.../free2004.html

Plus, a lot fairer to the person(s) who took the time to put the list together and update it regularly.

Which is exactly why I suggest they go ahead and postpone it until '06 (assuming that there is an '05-'06 season).

dont be dissapointed if u dont see moore on the first or second line. in all reality if he does make the team it will be only as a 4th liner and i dont even really see him making it, so like i said dont be dissapointed, i like everything else just like i said moore wont be anywhere near the 1st or second line.

Of course, we all would presume that the Rangers could fall into the top 5 if there was a season, with Phoenix climbing out. But then again, you never really know. So like I started out, if there is no season, there is absolutely no way to conduct a draft fairly.
I was thinking about this lately, and while there is no fair way to conduct who picks where, I came up with an idea. This is all based on no hockey this year then the two side coming to an agreement sometime next summer:

Basically conduct an unweighted lottery for the non playoff teams from last year to determine their draft positioning. Then conduct a weighted lottery for playoff teams to determine their positioning. This would mean non playoff teams still getting to choose at the top of the draft while all of them should have a viable chance to pick top 3. That's the fairest way I could think for them to determine draft position without having any team results to go by.
