What are an NHL GM's special assignments?

Discuss.

@CanadiensMTL
Jacques Martin will remain with the club. He’ll be responsible for special assignments for Habs GM Pierre Gauthier.

Basically you are still getting paid so do something while you are on the pay roll. Like pass the broom or something

Seriously I think he is a professional scout. Maybe he advised PG to get Bourque for example.

Booking their vacations together this summer after Gauthier gets canned too.

The "special assignments" JM is staying on to do include proof reading Gauthier's CV, photocopying it, and faxing it everywhere.

The sooner these two corporate Joe boys are gone from the Canadiens the better, how much more damage can they instill

Starting to think JM will take Gauthier's place at the end of the year...

Special assignments to work is what future considerations is to trades.

If it's indeed the case (which I doubt), you'd have to scratch Patrick Roy as new head coach candidate.

It's nothing new, the guy is still getting paid so you use him. He is a smart hockey guy that can help with scouting or whatever assignment the habs want to give him.

Jackets did the same with Hitchcock.

He is not becoming GM lol. Did Dreger scare people into thinking this?

Exactly... he's still on payroll, so they give him jobs to do.

If we fire Gauthier he'll probably be given a similar role until his contract expires.

It doesn't mean that he has any real power, just that there are a ton of games to be scouted, and you have to pay the guys anyways, so they might as well work.

I like how no one ever gets fired in the Canadiens organization, just promoted. Unfortunately you've done a terrible job but here's a cushy consultant job.

I read somewhere on Twitter that basically, Jacques will be assigned teams to scout and will also visit Habs prospects to catch up on their development. Basically he's a scout that's getting payed way more than one.

If anything, he can be a negociator advisor/Special Duty Scouting. He'd be pretty good at it.

This is the same in every organization in the NHL.

Until your contract expires or you get hired by someone else, you do other jobs for the organization

see Ken Hitchcock in Columbus and Andy Murray in St. Louis.

For some reason reading this made me think about George Costanza.
Anyone familiar with Seinfeld pretty much know what I mean.
