Real waste too, as we now have a shot at more promising QB prospects in this draft, but will pass on them because it is too early to admit Ponder was a mistake at 12.
Uh, which one?
RGIII? Pass. The guy has had multiple injuries in college and I really don't know how good he'll be in the NFL (probably become a bust for the Vikings)
Luck? No chance at getting him.
Those are the only two.
Minnesota actually put themselves in good position for 2013.
What do Vike fans feel about Ponder after seeing him? Seems that he is really splitting fanbase from what I have read of Vike message boards
Some see him as a good potential longterm option as starter ,, Others see him as wasted 1st round pick and a guy with limited upside (Ala Colt McCoy)
I don't think anyone should be making definitive claims about Ponder's future in the NFL after one season. Just like any rookie QB, he was up and down. At times he looked very good, other times he was average, and there were also times when he was just awful. The fact that he got worse as the season went on was a bit concerning but teams obviously started to game plan against him and with more experience he should be able to adjust, read the coverages, and pick up where the blitz is coming from.
I do like the fact that he showed a lot of athleticism and he was very good in the red zone and on 3rd down. I have no idea if they were garbage time stats or not but the red zone and 3rd down are usually high pressure situations and he handled those pretty well.
Hopefully the Vikings can improve the o-line and add another receiver this offseason. Improving those two positions should help him. Also, this will be his first real NFL offseason and he'll be able to actually work with the other offensive players and coaches.

If they suck, Barkley or Jones or whoever.
If they do well...well they do well.
Funny that you diss RGIII for injuries while pimping Ponder.
Ponder didn't just have injuries in college, he proved to be brittle in his first year as a starter.
Bottom line is that RGIII has better physical tools, is more accomplished and flat-out the better QB prospect than Ponder. If Ponder were in the draft this year, he would still be a 2nd round caliber prospect and well behind RGIII.
NFL approved to give the 49ers 200 million for their Stadium south of SF in Santa Clara. With the loan already approved by the bank, this was the final hurdle to get the stadium going.
That statement plus the overall tone in the last week between the two parties makes it highly likely that Peyton is done as a Colt.
There are reports on ESPN that Peyton is willing to be "flexible" on his contract.
OK, from an outsider's POV, I think Peyton should hold firm and make the Colts either cut him or activate the final 4 years of his contract and get paid the $28 million. Peyton should not restructure his deal because at some point over the next couple of years, there is going to be constant pressure and media to turn the duties over to Luck. Don't want to deal with that constantly. Also, by getting cut, Peyton can choose which team he wants to sign with. Don't end up like Favre who had to go to the Jets even though he wanted to go to the Vikings that first year. Don't let the Colts decide where you go.
Also, from Luck's POV, if I were his agent, I just keep quiet until I hear about Peyton. If you can quietly hint to Irsay that Luck will pull an Eli and demand a trade if Peyton returns to Indy, then you can do so, or you can simply remain quiet about it. No point in letting Luck sit on the bench for a year or two. He's ready to play now.
And there are teams with top 10 picks in the draft, Miami, Cleveland, Washington, Seattle that would swap picks with Indy, toss in their 2013 1st and likely give up their 2012 2nd rounder to pull off the deal.
And the Browns have the #22 pick from the Falcons to sweeten the pot.
Colts eventually need a new QB to replace Manning. Can either do it with Luck this year or hope you get lucky and land someone else in a future draft, but he likely won't be as good.

I don't want another injury prone QB.
The QB depth in this draft is absolutely terrible outside of RGIII and Luck. I just don't know what to make of RGIII. Without the right offensive coordinator (and I'm not certain of Musgrave), Griffin will become a bust.
If Ponder bombs, which I am expecting, we are in line with two better QBs in the next draft.

Regardless of either of our desires, RGIII is a better QB prospect that Ponder. That was my point.
Howard Eskin thinks so too. Driving home today listening to ESPN 980 here, I was yelling at my radio about why the Redskins would do something that stupid. Like signing a washed up quarterback to play here has worked before, oh wait it didn't, and it happened 2 seasons ago, lol

Brees is washed up? Are you watching a different Football league?

Did you just forget him breaking the passing yards record this year or something?
Oh, I thought you were talking about Peyton Manning
Eskin thinks Manning will go to the Redskins
No problem with Brees but we do not exactly have the kind of complementary personnel to assist him
I don't expect Peyton to sign with a team in the same division as Eli. 2 games a year against Eli plus competing for the same division title. I think there goes the Cowboys chances as well of landing Peyton.
Again, I do expect the Colts to cut Peyton. Both sides, the Colts and Peyton don't want to look like the one who is responsible for Peyton leaving.
But, at the end of the day, money talks in the NFL and a $28 million bonus to a 36 year old QB is too much money given the risks. Better to just call an end to a great relationship and move on. That frees Peyton to sign with a team of his choice.
Where would he go as a free agent? Miami has potential. Jets, need to get their act together, but I don't think he'll go there to the same town as his brother Eli. KC? Won the division 2010, but were ravaged by injuries last season. Cleveland, no chance as they are far from winning. Baltimore would be interesting, but I just don't think they will drop Flacco. Minny, they need to re-tool now. Seattle, might be a bit too young, but a possibility. Cardinals, that might be a good location for him. Wash and Dal, both need an upgrade, but I can't see Peyton in the same division as Eli.
Manning isn't going to the Redskins. He's staying in the AFC. That's the easier road to the Super Bowl right now.
He can sign with the Redskins and have to go through:
NFC East (Eli, Eagles, whatever the Cowboys are), Rodgers/Stafford/Cutler, Brees in the South, and assuming the 49ers don't bounce next year. And he wants no part of having to answer questions every day (day) about being in the same division as his brother.
In the AFC, he can sign with the Jets/Dolphins, and all he has to do is stay ahead of Brady, and the QB's of the best teams will be Flacco and Schaub. No one in the AFC West is good enough.
He'll be in the same spot Nnamdi was last summer. It won't matter what other teams offer, he's going to pick his team because they'll give him whatever he wants.
