Hi all. I'm a long time reader first time poster. I've read a lot where you guys say we can't have the winter classic here in NY because of the Pinstripe bowl. Why couldn't they have it at Citi Field? I mean it's a hockey game and Citi Field is just as convenient as Yankee Stadium.

Well Yankee Stadium, even if it is the new one, has more history already.
Something to keep in mind though the pinstripe bowl contract expires in 2013 and since the Rangers likely won't be in the Winter Classic in 2013 they could have it at Yankee Stadium in 2014.

I think the main reason is that the league would rather do it at Yankee Stadium. Once they go to a city, odds are they're not going back for a while. So, they'd rather wait for Yankee Stadium to become available so they don't "waste" their NY Winter Classic in Citi Field.
It's not that Citi's a bad spot for it, but Yankee Stadium just has much greater marketability than Citi Field has. Would probably have much more interest throughout the rest of the country to have it at Yankee Stadium vs. Citi Field.
I think the Yankee Stadium vs. Citi Field thing means more to New Yorkers than anyone else. There's obviously some marketability difference, but I think most people will look at the game simply as hockey played outdoors. Can't really see anyone that would otherwise be interested in the game not tuning in simply because the game is at Citi.

How marketable is Citizens Bank Park really? If it's in NY, that's all the marketing you need.
Yankee Stadium is way more marketable than Citi Field, and the Classic is all about marketability.
The novelty is the game is outside and whatever story they want to create about the two teams playing each other. The venue they pick is well secondary.

Id boycott a winter classic at citi field. It would be a joke, thats like choosing the islanders organization to represent the tri state area in some hockey related thing instead the rangers. Its Yankee stadium or bust, you go with the history, tradition, the spectacle of it all.
Plus your combining my 2 favorite sports teams. Imagine a winter classic patch with the yankee stadium facade on it, OMG awesome!!

The venue would not be "well secondary" if it was Yankee Stadium. The Yankees are arguably the most famous team in all of sports, and Yankee Stadium, even though it's the new one, is one of the most historic venues.
Wrigley Field was heavily marketed a few years back with the Hawks/Wings. I would expect the same, probably more so, if the game was at Yankee Stadium.
Having it at Citi Field would be an absolute joke, and won't happen. Picking Citi Field over Yankee Stadium would be like choosing the Kia over the Rolls Royce.

It's not picking Citi over Yankee Stadium--it's picking Citi because Yankee Stadium isn't available nor willing to host the game on the date the NHL has established for the Winter Classic. What if Yankee Stadium continues to book other events on New Year's weekend? Do we just not host a Winter Classic while waiting for the venue to decide to leave the date open?
Obviously hosting it at Yankee Stadium would provide for an additional marketing angle, but it's far from essential. Again, it's the outdoor concept that's most marketed and most alluring. Do people care about Heinz Field or Citizens Bank Park? No, they care about an outdoor game in Pittsburgh or Philadelphia.
I don't really care what the venue is for us, I just don't want to wait until the Yankees decide they'd rather give the venue to the NHL instrad of hosting two ****** teams in a meaningless bowl game.
