I hope it's not lame. For some reason a lot of these statues leave much to be desired. Oh well, as long as it's not the guy who did the Gordie Howe statue *shudder*. Can't believe that guy's work is/was popular.
I hate statues of people that are still alive. they seem a bit sinister to me for some reason.
Personally I don't believe in statues of specific people at all, sports figures or anybody. It's some kind of extremist idol worship that I just don't care for.
Every day, I walk by the Willie Stargel and Clemente statues, and they are complete eye sores. Nothing against those guys at all. I do not like statues.
I don't think anyone prays to the statue of Roberto Clemente...
Calling it 'extremist idol worship' is so far off base it's not even funny.

It is idol worship to even have the statue there. People stop and look at it, get their pictures taken with it. They may not pray to it but it's the same notion, the same impulse. By having the statue, you are elevating the person to a status that is above human.

You can't go that route without falling into a huge rabbit hole. We, as humans, idolize a lot of things. Not sure how you can make the case simply for statues without acknowledging the many, many other ways we idolize not only people, but possessions, etc.
Good question, I would say it depends on the intended effect of the painting or mural.
It would depend on if the purpose was primarily aesthetic or if it was primarly to honor and glorify the subject. I understand that many works of art could cross into both areas.

You are right about that, and I would acknowledge that as well.

Fair enough. I get your point for sure and it's an interesting discussion. I guess I just don't have a problem with the Penguins honoring their owner and all time best player with a statue. It's not like he wanted one as an ego trip. To me, it serves to teach new fans of the history and tradition of the team by showing their most influential star.
edit: A good example of where I think you are coming from is with Lebron James. I live in Cleveland and fans really got kind of creepy with their idolish love for him. He was touted as the savior, King James, and we are all "Witnesses". There was this larger than life banner of him (like the size of a building) hanging across the street from the Q with him doing his stupid chalk thing that said "Witness". Now to me that was wrong. The whole team became about him and that banner just served to increase his already massive ego.
With Lemieux it's completely different and I think the statue serves a better purpose.

Yeah, it is an interesting discussion. And honestly, I'm not necessarily against honoring a human being who did great things, in some way. There's just something about statues that I find creepy.
Think about the statute as a service to future generations. I can't even begin to tell you how many hours I've spent under the Rabbie Burns statue in front of Phipps Conservatory.
Awesome. After all he's accomplished both on and off the ice, Sir Mario deserves a statue IMO.
With that said, I worry about it potentially being vandalized by visiting Craps, Filthydelphia, etc. fans after games. Or even just by punk local kids running around who have no respect for property.
It's about time, Staples has a Gretzky statue and we needed a Mario Statue. Mario has done so much for the team and for the city. He's not only a great player, he's a great guy. Has raised millions for cancer with the Mario Lemieux foundation but he also helps kids have better hospital experiences with his Austins playroom project. A fitting tribute to an outstanding player and an even more outstanding human being.

don't worry, the trumpet guy who plays outside the Trib gate will keep things real...
