NHL Network is having Mario Lemieux day tomorrow. Starting with the live unveiling, they'll also show a special on the Pens' first two cups, then a replay of the 5 goals 5 ways game.
Sadly this only applies to NHL Network USA and not NHL Network Canada.
Just checked my listings and apparantly instead of the Mario stuff we Canadians get 2 back to back games of Montreal vs. Calgary and then Minnesota at Carolina instead.
****ing pathetic. I'd have loved to watch the Mario Marathon. Who gives a **** about those 4 garbage teams.
It's not hard and I can't believe the powers that be choose THIS moment...
I think when I speak for the majority of people when I saw DUH to the fact that the above pic should have been the correct choice (or any similar variant).
Regardless of what the statue actually is, I find it rather pretentious to errect a statue of oneself in front of one's own arena. I understand it was "funded privately by the Penguins’ ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community", but still... seems kinda douchey. I would have preferred they waited until he is either dead or no longer involved with the team (I assume death will come first). Just my 2 cents.

To be fair, this isn't Lemieux on an ego trip. Much of this has to do with responding to fans and media that have called for a Lemieux statue outside CEC from the very beginning. I have a friend who works inside the Pens organization(nothing crazy high up or anything) and from some of the things she's said, it's pretty clear that Lemieux has actually never been that big on the idea of a statue of himself.
It is idol worship to even have the statue there. People stop and look at it, get their pictures taken with it. They may not pray to it but it's the same notion, the same impulse. By having the statue, you are elevating the person to a status that is above human.
That is the most superstitious sounding statement I've heard in a long time.

Mario didn't want the statue, the fans do. It would have been more douchey to say no to something fans have been asking for for years.

That's exactly what the Gretzky statue looks like so no they weren't gonna do that pose for better or worse. That said this new one sucks really hard. They couldn't space Mario out a little bit, even make him a little bigger? It just looks like 3 equally generic dudes playing grab ass--I mean hockey.

I too wasn't real thrilled this was it, but let's reserve judgement until we actually see it. I would have gone with the Casey goal, but this moment does also capture Lemieux's dominance. That's really the point here.
This picture is of a scale model taken from above. The statue is obviously much larger and more detailed. The statue is also elevated and meant to be viewed from below, so I'm afraid you'll have to wait a minute to pass judgment.
