Berenson’s recruiters did not see Hagelin again until he attended the Big Rapids Camp as a 17-year-old, auditioning for a possible spot with a team in the junior-level North American Hockey League. Michigan, Northern Michigan and Ferris State sent scouts. After witnessing Hagelin’s quickness and hockey sense, Michigan made a scholarship offer.
“His speed was too good to be true,” Powers said. “We knew that eventually, he would play for us.”
Quote:
“Carl had the speed, but there wasn’t much to him,” said the Rangers’ chief scout Gord Clark, referring to Hagelin’s 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame. “But when they told me he committed to Michigan, it changed everything. Red Berenson plays an up-tempo system. It often doesn’t work out this way with a prospect because N.H.L. teams don’t have control, but Carl could not have gone to a better place to develop.”
Quote:
“I put him on lines and he ignites those lines with his speed,” Tortorella said. “It’s dog on bone.”
To me it begins and ends with the fact that he's a FIFTH FRICKIN ROUNDER!
After this it's all gravy.
The fact that he's even skating with the Rangers let alone how well he's playing is mind blowing. A character player that will eventually stand out on a team Stuffed with 'em.
Easiest kid in the world to root for. Hopefully he keeps it up and is a fixture for a long time.

6th round. But that makes it even better

Jaime Lannister has better hands than Brian Boyle.
I didn't realise he was another late-round prospect Christer Rockström had a hand in uncovering... The Rangers seem to be OK without him (the article also mentions Gajdosik), but I was worried when his contract wasn't renewed. Anyone know what he is up to now?

Hagelin gives me hope that McColgan will make it in a few years. I really feel he has it in him to get to where Hagelin is now. McColgan doesn't have the speed, but despite his small stature he does have physical strength which is likely to improve in the next couple of years.
I like the kid, would like to see him get out of his current slump though..
Slump? Had an assist against Nashville and a goal the next game against Pittsburgh. He's a rookie who comes to play every night, much like Callahan and has 8 goals and 8 assists for 16 points in 28 games as a rookie. How the hell is that slumping?
The only thing I ask Hagelin to work on, other than the usual, is please work on the shot.
If he gets a stronger shot, he could really be a lethal player. He has an OK shot now, but improve it and he could be a consistent 20+ goal scorer.
Actually I disagree SM. I think he has a pretty good shot. I think his problem is he doesn't shoot enough and is indecisive at times when it comes to taking a shot or passing the puck.
I still don't understand why Zuccarello has dropped so low in Torts picking order. We could really use his speed and technical play. He might not be the grinder Rupp or Boyle is but he has so much skill... I hope it doesn't go to waste
Small CAN MAKE IT IN PRO SPORTS ..... SMALL AND SLOW ( which MZA is ) no chance . He's nit really slow but he isn't lighting quick little guy like Marchand , MSL , Fleury was , GIONTA , and he doesn't shoot the puck like Cammalieri .
Hagelin's slight frame with lightning quickness and top end and Hockey sense will result in him having a nice career . He reminds me a lot of Radek Dvorak ( still playing well )

speed?
speed?
what speed?
are we talking about Zuccarello-Aasen here? or someone else i am unfamiliar with? MZA's speed is about on par with Ruslan Fedotenkos speed. do you think Feds' speed helps the lineup?
Skill wise there is no question, MZA is a talented guy. but he lacks the speed, and the size to be a difference maker. 1 or the other is pretty much needed in this day and age, or some combination of the 2. he has neither.

His speed? What speed? Zuccarello isn't fast at all.
