Why does either team do this?

Getting worse at defence doesnt make you better for a cup run.

Detroit does not get better by trading Kronwall. Not at all.
Pull Kronner and Lubo, then you'd might have a deal.

Depends on whether it's the Vishnovsky and Lydman of this year or last year.
Don't see Detroit doing this though - Ken Holland never trades away his players.
Also, I believe Murray just said this week that Selanne will not be dealt away.

Even if we assume that's the case(I don't think it is), Detroit isn't going to want to move Kronwall with Lidstrom so close to retirement.

Stuart wants to be in CA closer to his family, but the Wings appear the clear winner in this deal. DET would have to sweeten the pot. Not sure DET needs to make such drastic changes, but I could see them making 1 or two smaller deals to bolster their depth heading into the playoffs.

As someone else said, take out Visnovsky and Kronwall out and you might have a deal. No way Holland trades Kronwall with Lidstrom so close to retirement.

Selanne said he would consider asking for a trade if the clinch no playoffs

Murray just reiterated today in the LAtimes that Selanne won't be traded. He even asked the reporter to somehow make that comment stronger.

Not a chance Detroit does that. I can't see Murray making any trades right now with the team on a tear either.

Murray makes final decision, and when he goes out of his way to not only say he won't be traded, but ask the reporter to "make those words stronger"... Yeah he's not going anywhere.
Selanne didn't say he'd ask to go to a contender. He said he'd consider it if Murray asked him. Completely different things.

Yes, the Bastion of Journalism, the Orange County Register. If that paper was a hockey player it would be Dustin Penner.

No way Detroit trades Kronwall unless it's part of something that brings back a younger better defenseman
