Plenty of players take paycuts as they are about to hit UFA - because they are overpaid. Heck it just happened a few days ago with Beauchemin.

Not saying this is the case with Liles - just pointing out it does happen frequently.

This kind of surprises me. With the emergence of Gardiner, and Holzer and Aulie in the wings (although you could say Aulie is more in the same category as Gardiner there), Leafs have a lot of young defenceman knocking on the door for a spot in the lineup. I guess one or more are on their way out...

I am guessing the deal is 4x4.5M with a limited NTC. If it's around that number, that's a good deal. Before his concussion, he was the Leaf's 2nd best D-man IMO. He was the most dangerous offensively, and if he made a mistake, he could usually get back into position because of his speed.

EDIT: 3.875M is a very good deal.
