Per McKenzie - Niitty has been put on waivers...

Very interesting.

Probably to test the waters and do right for Niity.

If he doesn't get claimed (likely), then maybe re-entry waivers is next. Doubt his cap is the issue, though.

I'm thinking maybe someone asked Wilson to do this (meaning a team didn't want to give anything up for him).

I don't think his salary/cap hit is an issue either.

Hope someone picks him up (hello Detroit).

On the main board someone is saying to bank on the Ducks claiming him. Considering they are pretty thin at goalie right now, it wouldn't surprise me. Obviously Nitty has no trade value (meaning DW probably tried but nobody was interested), so the Sharks need to get rid of him and his cap hit and also do right by him and find him a place to play in the NHL.

Wings are last in waivers order, I think. There are surely a bunch of other teams that would put in claims before Niitty - Bolts, Ducks, Senators. Cap space isn't an issue for many teams this season.

Feel kind of bad for the guy, he was so excited to come here and get his shot as a starting goalie on a really good team. Then Niemi happened, then he got hurt, and hurt again. Now he's on waivers.

Have to think the conditioning stint was in fact a showcase, he sucked, and any offers DW might have gotten for him evaporated. As much as I like Niitty, he's got no one to blame but himself.

When does Nitty's waiver period expire? Will it be tomorrow? Just wondering if the AS break has an effect on waiver periods....

I can see the Senators being interested. Tampa Bay isn't. I guess with Ellis being out maybe the Ducks would be interested.

There aren't a lot of teams that will get rid of their current back up for Niitty, I think Detroit & Ott are two that would.

So if he's claimed, are we still on the hook for a percentage of his salary, or is that only on re-entry waivers?

In what universe would DW possibly have received anything of value in return for a perpetually injured goalie who's terrible when he's actually in the lineup and carries a cap hit of $2mil?

Good move, hopefully he gets picked up. And hopefully Handzus is the next to be waived.

Looks like we couldn't get anything for him. It's not cool to let him rot here and not play him, so DW has done the right thing. Hope he gets claimed.

LeBrun said he heard from multiple sources that DW is trying to land a top 6 foward.

It is possible that waiving Nitty is a precursor to such a deal, i.e. clearing out dead cap space for that move. Of course DW would have love to get something for him, but if there is no trade value, there is no trade value.

For example, if DW is on the verge of acquiring someone with the cap hit of someone like Semin (not saying Semin, just someone in that cap hit range), moving/waiving/dump Nitty would have to be done prior to acquiring that guy.

Sharks need NHL roster spot for skater more than they can use a 3rd NHL goalie (right now).

I think his waiver period will end Thursday 9am PT, so he'll know where to pack for.

Clowe, Wingels -- both need a roster spot (hopefully) next week.

Only on re-entry waivers. (Half his salary)

I see DW doing that only if he has a guarantee from a team they'd pick him up as he won't waste the NHL roster space.

His cap hit at this point is around $1mil and I'm sure Wilson would've moved him for a 7th...and regarding Handzus - I get it, you hate him and think he's the worst player ever but they CAN'T waive Handzus (w/o his permission) so you should probably move past that.

Only re-entry waivers.

Meh... I wasn't expecting any trade value from him, so I'm not concerned about giving him away.

Thought it was an NTC. Guess not. That's brutal. I don't think he's the worst player ever but there's more than enough evidence that he's been by far the worst regular Shark this season.

No, that's for re-entry only. If he's claimed now, we're off the hook completely.

i love Niity and he has always been one of my favorite goalies. that said, this does not shock me at all.

greiss has played strong and is young and could fight niemi for the starting job in the future.

niity has been plagued by injuries and surgeries. it seems whenever he starts to get hot and play well he gets hurt and goes under the knife again.

with the load of goalies rumored to be available in trade, i am not shocked no one would pay for niity.

with the numbers niity had in his conditioning stints, i'd not be shocked if he clears waivers and some GM will gamble on snagging him if he hits re-entry waivers.

a sad day for niity, i hope he gets claimed and a chance to play, but i am doubting it.

having niity last season really helped greiss and his development, imho. even if he is lost for nothing in return, he at least provided that in his time with the team.

I really hope this doesn't keep us from spending to the cap if he goes unclaimed.

I'm sure we'll send McCarthy, Wingels and possibly even waive Ferriero to make room for returning players. I doubt Niitty was related to that, more likely to 1) Do the right thing and 2) Clear a contract spot and cap space for a top-6 player.

I know it's illogical, and we all have these great hopes of who it will be, but in the back of my mind I have this fear he's going to go after Semin heh.
