The S Word

So do only canadian hockey fans honour the age-old tradition of not predicting a you-know-what before or during a game?

I know Americans don't say "no-hitter" or "perfect game" if a pitcher is in the process of tossing one (Especially in the later innings) so why are they so comfortable with saying the S-word during hockey games?

I remember I took an American girl who was going to school in Winnipeg to a Moose game a little while ago. I was explaining some of the rules of the game and it just so happened that the Moose were up 3-0 in the third period. With about 2 minutes to go, she says "Our goalie is really good tonight. Nobody has scored on him!" and I'm all "Oh yeah, when that happens in hockey it's called a shutout".

BAM, they score...3-1.

That was my last date with the girl (She didn't call me back) and my last time ever saying shutout during a game, regardless of who I was explaining to.

Gord Miller's bad for it. The worst part is that he still says it freely...almost defiantly.

Quote:
Miller: "Now last week, Ray, some Toronto Maple Leaf fans got their knickers in a twist because we talked about a shutout in the third period for Jonas Gustavsson and Minnesota went on to score a few minutes later. Let us reiterate, we're 300 feet from the ice, Carey Price does not have cable in the crease and cannot hear us and therefore what we say has no impact. Helm...drops it back, with it HE SCORES!"

My son and I both gasped then groaned one time when my wife said it! Luckily she didn't jinx Pavs that time. One of the Thrashers announcers used to say it a lot and over-emphasize it if the other team's goalie hadn't let anything thru by the middle of the third period. It was funny but I'm not sure if it's supposed to work that way when the opponents are the ones stopping them all.

Well, can you blame her?

But, to answer your question, I don't think it's an actual thing in Sweden. I don't recall anyone commenting on it during games, but I don't watch much Swedish hockey anymore, maybe it's more nowadays. I always tried to keep the thought out of my mind when I played though, it felt like I had a better chance to do well all game long if I managed that.

The clincher was probably when I shushed her as she was talking so I could hear who got the second assist on a Moose goal. It seemed important at the time, not so much now though.

Well look don't be so hard on yourself.

If she's going to actually talk and expect a conversation during a hockey game, it wasn't meant to be from the get go.

About all that anyone should expect is;

- Want another beer?
- Since you're going to the bathroom this 7th time since the game started, get me a beer and a slice of pizza on your way back.
- Good pass.
- Good hit.
- Watch the back door pass!
- Good shot.
- Good goal.

Anything beyond that and your date is really stretching it too far.

The "S" word, probably somewhere in the Bro Rules of things not to say.

She found it hilarious that I actually slammed a fist onto my leg in anger after a bad call.

I'm not superstitious at all and I don't think mentioning the s-word anywhere (at least, anywhere the goalie can't hear it) makes one iota of difference.

That said, enough people do care about it, and care strongly enough, that I would never say the word when the opportunity is on the line.

For tonight's game, given the last two games against the Flyers, I have a feeling it won't come up.

Hey why don't the superstitious people chant shutout when the opposing goalie hasn't been scored on?
Might have helped us out lately.

I just scream obscenities at the TV and my girlfriend looks at me strange and tries to tell me to calm down.

Doesn't work against the opposition. Only the team you're cheering for.

That's fine, just don't say shutout within ear shot of me and I'll be fine.

Hey WaveRaven! What's that occurrence in hockey you like? You know, the one where the goalie stops all the shots he faces and his team wins?

Guess what people, jinxs don't exist. If you hadn't said shutout, he still would have scored. It also doesn't matter if you watch a game or not, the outcome will still be the same. Why not send your sick kid to a witch doctor if you believe in magic. hth

I don't think anyone is actually taking it seriously. It's more for fun like not changing the GDT theme if the Jets win.

Yep, all in good fun.

But, if you do it, we'll grill you for it.
