Pegula bought First Arena in Elmira?

My buddy just told me that ge heard Pegula bought the arena in Elmira on January 9th. Apparently he also tried to purchase the Jackals but they were asking too much so he settled on just the arena. Thus meaning in all likelyhood. He will try to force out the Jackals so he can open up shop with an ECHL franchise in Elmira?

This is just heresay but pretty interesting nonetheless. IF true, I really wish he would just concentrate on the Sabres for a while.

He did buy the arena. As of Jan. 9th.

Also, the Jackals are leaving. Don't know about the naming rights, but this is to be the Sabres ECHL team.

EDIT: The Jackals are leaving for sure, there is a team from Georgia coming in.

If Gwinnett is moving here I would hate it. First they lose the Thrashers, then the Gladiators (which is actually one of the better run and better attended ECHL clubs)? The hockey fans (and yes, there are plenty of them, if not the levels of fandom seen up here) would really be screwed.

My dad said something about that this weekend. I really hope there's some training camp stuff there. Looks like he is really trying to regionalize the franchise even more.

He's got his hands in many hockey pots, but I think there is a master plan here.

omitting the part that people care about: we still suck. money was never the issue, it was getting the right people in here, regardless the money. now we have the money yet the willingness to change for the better is still a missing piece. ding ding ding

More evidence if you needed it that Pegula doesn't say he's going to do stuff before he does it.

I don't understand why he'd do this unless the arena turns a profit.
There's no money to be made in the ECHL.

Only thing I can see is to easily supply players to Rochester when Humpty Dumpty gets cracked again. And to tap into that market to gain a bigger area of fans.

Most organizations send less than a handful of players to the ECHL every year.

I was a big proponent of having an ECHL affiliate, but owning one is just a waste of money.

This is great news. Having an ECHL team helps us develop project players or undrafted players without having to rely on any outside coaching. It will all be sabres staff developing players from the minute they turn pro. A few players I can think of off the top of my head that played ECHL were Burrows and Desharnais. Also THN did an article about how some goalies now(good ones, not just scrubs) are starting in the ECHL when they turn pro rather than backing up in the AHL. Terry obviously isn't going anywhere anytime soon and this helps the franchise long term.

Either way, I'm sure this is being kept quiet so the guys at TBN don't start a big war over this.

why would they start a war over this? TP is spending his money on an ECHL affiliate for the Sabres franchise. What is there for them to be up in arms about?

These business moves aren't mutually exclusive ventures with building/adjusting the team on the ice. Furthermore, it's pretty likely that Pegula started looking at doing this months ago -- these things take time.

If anything, this reinforces how committed Pegula is to building a strong hockey community in WNY/UNY.

Im going to assume that he has been working on this as part of his plan for a while now and just keeping it quiet. I wonder if he is going to dip into other leagues that prospects play in in order to increase Buffalo's influence on incoming players. Makes some sense to me. Draft a guy, he comes into one of your farm teams, you start bringing him up the way that YOU want not some other person, and make them fit YOUR system.

Actually, yes it would be if you were an owner.
The teams current struggles are short term compared to the time of Pegula's ownership of the franchise.

This type of move is most certainly a strategic long term investment to ensure the organization achieves consistency in it's competitiveness.

The re-union with Rochester, the purchasing of the arena in Elmira and subsequently the locating of an ECHL team there, all by the owner of the Buffalo Sabres puts a concrete foundation for hockey in the western new york region for decades to come. He's made all the right moves in this area so far.

Absolutely a priority for a new owner with a longer term strategy in mind.

I generally agree but if they're serious about using the ECHL team for development it behooves them to have their own coaching and professional staff. I don't know if that's the case with Gwinnett now but it definitely will be in the future.

Although they obviously don't need to own an ECHL team to be able to control the coaching staff.

Not only that, but it's a great way to develop non-player personnel. You have coaches who play the Sabres' (still yet to be determined) system from the minor leagues up.
