ovechkin was not captain because crosby is captain in pittsburgh. he is captain because its his team. almost anyone else as captain would be an irrelevant. chris clark was a perfect example. clark was widely respected for his effort and sacrifice(playing with a broken face and all), but unless he was scoring 30 goals and being an impact player he was a secondary force of such a nature that he was irrelevant.
mike knuble and/or troy brouwer or even jeff halpern are fine as the king's squire, but 8 is still the king..........long live the king.
this management. a group of complete incompetents, eh? who would you have made captain? knuble? poti? those are really the only choices off that roster. go back and look at it. bradley?

still leaves the question. who off that roster should have been captain instead? the A's were ovechkin, poti, backstrom and knuble with clark as captain. knuble had a year and a half left on a contract where he might retire.
neither laich nor knuble are good choices. i am as big a knuble fan as there is, but you dont change team captains every other season.

Yeah, I agree. Ovechkin and Backstrom were the only choices at the time, and it would have been pretty hard to name Backstrom. I realize Ovechkin was their only real choice, aside from going without a captain for a while. That doesn't mean he's the right person to be captain, or that it's not unfortunate that the decision can't be undone now. I certainly don't think he's a terrible captain, but he's far from ideal.
