I could live with Bourque-Plex-Gio as a 2nd line if we had a 3rd line that could score some goals, like a 2b line but Moen-Eller-Palush has 0 scoring potential and neither does the fourth line. So it's a one-line-team again.

Abandonne pour McKinnon

Either way, Gionta will play with Desharnais or Plekanec next season. Our lottery pick from this year probably won't be ready.

Who do you play him with? Do you give Cole to Plekanec to give him some size? I'd like to try:

Bourque - Plekanec - Cole
Pacioretty - Desharnais - Gionta

next year. I'd like to keep Cole on the right and Pacioretty & Desharnais together.

I don't think keeping our #1 line this year is an option next season. We have very few options for size on offense for other lines.

Man our offense sucks

We are not getting Parise or Semin, just so you guys know. Also, you completely ignore the fact we have Gomez.

I'm not sure if this is a thread for intelligent discussion or for a ********** over your dream lineups.

Had some free time and I was bored. Here's what I came up with :

First of all, Gomez is gone, either in Europe/retired/amnesty clause but there is no way he's on the cap hit next year. Next, I trade Kaberle for whatever. IMO, it's not gonna be that hard as he's back to his old self PP wise and a team will be ready to take a gamble with him for a low pick/future considerations.

For the RFA, Palushaj and Geoffrion both need some time in the AHL, so they are off the cap hit, but they are tendered an offer to keep their rights. Nokolenein is, evidently, let go. Eller, White, Blunden, Emelin, Diaz, Subban, Price and St-Denis are tendered ;

Lars Eller : 2 years/$3M - $1.5M caphit
Ryan White : 3 years/$3.1M - $0.7M caphit
Mike Blunden : 1 year/$0.6M - $0.6M caphit
Alexei Emelin : 3 years/$6M - $2M caphit
Raphael Diaz : 2 years/$3M - $1.5M caphit
PK Subban : 3 years/$12.75M - $4.25M caphit
Frédéric St-Denis : 2 years/$1.2M - $0.6M caphit
Carey Price : 5 years/$32.5M - $6.5M caphit

For the UFA, Moen and Staubitz are re-signed. Darche, as hard is it is because I like the guy, and Campoli, not hard in this case, are let go ;

Travis Moen : 2 years/$3M - $1.5M caphit
Brad Staubitz : 1 year/$0.6M - $0.6M caphit

Finally, on the UFA market I sign Kristian Huselius, Jay McClement, Ryan Suter and Matt Carkner ;

Kristian Huselius : 2 years/$10M - $5M caphit
Jay McClement : 2 years/$4M - $2M caphit
Ryan Suter : 5 years/$35M - $7M caphit
Matt Carkner : 1 year/$0.6M - $0.6M caphit

It might be a little overpayment for Suter, but it's not that much, and considering the UFA market, the Habs have no choice but to offer big dollars.

Pacioretty (1.625) - Desharnais (0.85) - Cole (4.5)
Huselius (5) - Plekanec (5) - Gionta (5)
Bourque (3.33) - Eller (1.5) - Moen (1.5)
White (0.7) - McClement (2) - Staubitz (0.6) / Blunden (0.6)

That forwards group has a mix of skills, two-way play and toughness. Huselius, even if had some problem the last year in Columbus is well worth the risk. He's a legit top6 talent and would complement Plekanec and Gionta very well. If he has some injury issues again, Montreal will have depth in the AHL to fill the roster with talent. Jay McClement is a very solid addition. He's good on faceoffs and defensively aware, with White and Staubitz/Blunden will make a great checking line that bring the much needed toughness. The Eller line will bring tertiary scoring.

Suter (7) - Subban (4.25)
Markov (5.75) - Gorges (3.9)
Emelin (2) - Diaz (1.5) / Carkner (0.6) / St-Denis (0.6)

With that D-squad, the Habs fans don't have doubts like they had at the beginning of this season. The reason I bring Carkner in is very simple, to protect Emelin so he can play his style effectively. He isn't the same since the Malone incident and having a partner that can protect him will do him wonders. I know Carkner won't be able to play 20 minutes but on the bottom pairing he'll see 12-15 minutes a game at ES while Emelin plays 18 minutes at ES / PK and even if this was a problem, 3 of the top4 a minutes cruncher, so there's actually no problem. Also, I didn't like the Markov - Emelin pairing and I remember Markov and Gorges playing well together.

Price (6.5)
Budaj (1.15)

Not much explanation needed for the goalie tandem.

So this brings the Habs to a grand total of $65.455M. With the rumors of the cap going up to $69/70M there's still plenty of cap space and re-signing Pacioretty and Desharnais next season won't be hard.

I think these moves makes the Habs more than a bubble playoffs team and they're aren't impossible to pull off. With a good coach, this team will do wonders.

Toughts?

2012-13 MTL Cnd's
Goaltending
Trade Budaj for any pick
Carey Price
Sign Sanford/Harding (either at 1-1.5 Million$)
Reasoning: Budaj isn't the type of backup you want if your going to make a deep run, you want someone with enough talent that he'll be able to handle 22-26 games a season, be stable and get you some wins

Defense
Trade Weber for MacDonald
Sign Mike Weaver for depth
Reasoning: Yannick Weber is not likely to develop into any kind of offensive dynamo, MacDonald (NYI) is a solid defensive defenseman and he's about to hit his prime, he has alot of hits, alot of takeaways and seems to be still improving. This team needs to have a more physical edge to their defense, especially with Kaberle in it for the long haul, he can offer insulation and still be a good D man .To top that off Diaz seems to have a very good potential and with some physical training could be a pretty good defenseman. Weaver would be another depth guy maybe to replace St-Denis, he's a PK specialist and could offer relief from PK duties for Markov

Offense

Buy Gomez out.
Trade Gionta for Grabner
reSign Moen, 2 yrs 1.8 million per
Sign Ponikarovsky 2 years, 2.1 Million per
Probably not going to happen but, sign Gaustad or Parenteau 3 yrs.2.9-3.2 million $
try to trade Plekanec + Bourque + 3rd for Duchene , if not (probable) then trade Bourque for picks
Acquire Boyd Gordon, Sign Prust

Reasoning: We have to buy Gomez out, sitting him in the minors will just create a distraction for the young developing players and could pose as a bad influence. You kinda have to question a guy's work ethic and attitude if their play and point totals just drop off to the point of embarrassment. Meanwhile McDonagh is kicking ass out in NYR and will get the chance to hoist the Cup this summer. URGH. Anyways, I think Gionta has to go, not because he's a bad player but his contract sucks. Getting Micheal Grabner could be a surprisingly good move and his contract his a little easier to swallow, not to mention his age. Re-signing Moen seems like a solid move as does signing Ponikarovsky for 1.8-2.3/yr, he look great with Eller and Leblanc. Bourque has to go period, he really doesn't give a flying f about playing and shows no passion whatsoever, not to mention his hands of steel. I would trade Bourque for a Draft pick (2,3 or even 4) or try and make a package along with Plekanec for a #1 center, Matt Duchene, this guy has too much talent to fail. Check out Boyd Gordon's stats, he's a diamond in the rough and Prust>Staubitz, but if you can't get him or Asham just re sign Staubitz. Gaustad is a stud and Parenteau has alot of talent, and alot of grit and honestly I'd rather Leblanc plays a **** ton of mins in the AHL than 3rd line mins here Idk why I just doubt it's going to happen, I feel like because the market is so small Gaustad's value will be crazy high and so will Parenteau's

Probable Line-up

Pacioretty 1.6-Desharnais 850k-Cole 4.5
Forsberg 1.8-Plekanec 5-Grabner 3
Ponikarovsky 1.8-Eller 1.9-Leblanc 1.2
Moen 1.8-Gordon 1.3-White 800k

Prust 950k& Darche700k extra

Subban3.2-Gorges3.9
Emelin 2.2-Markov 5.5
Kaberle 4.2-MacDonald 500k
Diaz 1.2 xtra

Gomez Buy Out 3.5

Total 58,9 Million, 5.4 in Cap left

Well, this is a fantasy line up right? In my fantasy we get Grigs (already an outside chance unless we tank harder), and he excells in training camp, makes the team and seems like he's out performing Eller, or they develop some chemistry for a line and trade off at center.

With this year draft being really a good pick for us, I hope we get one of the 3 russian.
First thing is first, Gomez must be told to stay home until the dog's training camp so we can use his cap hit. Sign Moen andd Darch.
Now go hard for Parize....get him period!

Patch-Desharnais-Cole-this has worked so lets start next year with it
Parize-Plekanec-Bourque-speed, creativity and defensive awainess, top line potential
Moen-Eller-Gionta-play vs top lines with some grit and Eller could do well with vets
Darch-White-Staubitz-energie and Darch there could move with Plekanec if Bourque doesn't move his feet

Markov-Gorges-Gorges plays real good on the right side
Emelin-Subban-one year older and Emelin on the left looks way better
Kaberle-?- we need a solid right handed defensive Dman.Ideas?

As long as Darche and Gomez are out and we replace them both with somehow useful players, I'll be ok.

I like what you did here. Add some size on D and 2 scoring winger.
Would look for a upgrade on Nokelainen with the 2 mil left.

I know everyone is going gaga over Hurberdeau but in reality whether the Canadiens draft Grigerenko or F.Forsberg, either of these guys will probably be in the lineup next year and both of them, by all professional scouting reports, deem them as being more talented than Huberdeau. Pierre Mcguire said recently that if the Canadiens were to trade away the 2nd or even 3rd overall draft pick and just get Huberdeau it would be more disastrous than the Gomez trade. To say something of this magnitude certainly means that Huberdeau isn't as talented as his stats may dictate (just look at who he's playing with).

I hope whoever becomes the gm makes that trade just because they can and I hope Grigorenko makes good coin in the KHL.

Sucks to be Brandon Prust, you have a decent season, hit UFA, don't get that much of a raise and go from playing on the third line on the best team in the conference to be 13th forward on the worst. How did that happen?

Before you can go hard for Parize, you must be able to spell Parise.

How much are you willing to overpay him by then? I mean 'get him period', that sounds pretty serious, are we talking 10 million a year here? How many years?

I don't see us being much better next year due to the lack of solid UFAs and the gap in up and coming prospects for next season. I see it as another lottery pick year.

So here is my 2013-14 Roster.

First of all I would promote a tank by trading Plekanec + Prospect + Pick (not a first rounder) for Huberdeau.

Then I draft Filip Forsberg this season
Sign Paul Gaustad, bury Gomez and Kaberle.
Hope to get first overall and draft Nathan MacKinnon and sign Weber as UFA.

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR ROSTER
Montreal 2013-14 Roster
FORWARDS
Max Pacioretty ($1.625m) / David Desharnais ($3.000m) / Erik Cole ($4.500m)
Jonathan Huberdeau ($3.175m) / Nathan MacKinnon ($3.850m) / Filip Forsberg ($3.500m)
Louis Leblanc ($1.170m) / Lars Eller ($1.500m) / Brian Gionta ($5.000m)
Ryan White ($0.850m) / Paul Gaustad ($2.700m) / Travis Moen ($1.750m)
Ian Schultz ($0.846m) / Mike Blunden ($0.677m)
DEFENSEMEN
Shea Weber ($8.500m) / P.K. Subban ($4.500m)
Andrei Markov ($5.750m) / Alexei Emelin ($1.850m)
Josh Gorges ($3.900m) / Nathan Beaulieau ($1.250m)
Jarred Tinordi ($1.113m) /
GOALTENDERS
Carey Price ($6.500m)
Backup Goalie ($1.150m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $70,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $68,654,833; BONUSES: $3,000,000
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $1,345,167

I would be able to endure another bad year if the team could look like this is 2013-14. If we are a bubble team that year you trade Gionta and Markov as deadline deals and stock up more picks.

Fantasy land I know, but this is the type of team we should be striving to build. I also realize that Beaulie/Tinordi/1st round pick may have to go the other way to get Huberdeau, but in a perfect world it gets done without them lol.
