What Bobby said isn't surprising, he's the new guy on the block in Boston and he is trying to win some fans over
Regardless of what he was trying to do with those comments though, he should really be focusing on his team - the team that blew a 9 game lead in the last month of the season ousting themselves from the playoffs for a second straight year, which is the reason it is even his team in the first place
Ah, but therein lies the reason why Bobby wants the attention (besides ego), he wants the outside focus and the media on him as opposed to more talk about last year.
He's just got to be careful not to look silly, like the Jeter thing.
Valentine wasn't there for last year, so there's no point for him to even deal with any questions about it (you know he gets hammered with the obvious "what are you going to do this year to make up for/prevent/build upon last year's disappointing finish"). Give them your sound byte and make the media talk about what you say and want to talk about as opposed to having to deal with the same questions. Again, half of what comes out of any coach's mouth is an intentional tactic. He played this one perfectly. Shifts the attention from last year's collapse that he had no part of. He is going to win over Red Sox fans which is necessary as many were iffy about his hiring. And if he can ruffle some feathers amongst Yankees fans in the process, even better, as it may add some fuel to a once great rivalry that has lost a lot of its appeals in the last year or two.

Well that is what I took out of it, was Bobby looking silly not just with the Jeter thing, but to bring up Varitek's retirement and bring up the him and A-Rod incident over tons of other accomplishments the guy has had in his career was just as silly - he can make all the jokes he wants about the Tek/A-Rod incident, but when he retires? Silly.
It's time for the latest edition of what Met has an injury/sicknes and how has the medical staff ****ed up.
David Wright and Scott Hairston have both been injured already before a game has even been played in Spring Training and now Ike Davis has Valley Fever.

Just once would really appreciate if the Mets aren't sure what something is that they don't tell everyone it's definitely nothing.

Unbelievable: #Mets tell reporters Ike Davis has non-issue lung infection. Terry Collins & Ike tell team site he probably has Valley Fever.
What Valley Fever is...
"Valley fever is a fungal infection most commonly seen in the desert regions of the southwestern United States, and in Central and South America. You get it by breathing in fungal particles from soil. The infection starts in the lungs."
And this gem right out of the article on the Mets site...
"Whether that statement will be applicable each day come April is an unknown that makes his manager and Davis himself squirm. Davis is not the picture of health. He has, in fact, contracted Valley or Desert Fever, a malady that can interfere with a season and even end a career."
Is it just me or does John Heyman think any player halfway decent is a quote on quote superstar? He called Logan Morrison and Elvis Andrus one in the past. I mean you've got to be freaking kidding me

I hope Santana can get healthy so the Mets can trade him and get this rebuild on! 76 wins at best YAY! If theres no Devils home playoff game on 4/21. I take my dog to her first MLB game.
