NHL 12 Sabres Dynasty

Since it's the All-Star break and there isn't much to discuss currently (that hasn't already been more than thoroughly discussed), I thought it would be fun to have a thread for those who play Be a GM mode on NHL 12 with the Sabres and post about how their team is doing.

I'm currently at the start of year 3 of the "Pegula Plan". Did some awesome rebuilding. Here's my current line-up going into the season:

Thomas Vanek (A) - Nathan MacKinnon - Jason Pominville (C)
Tyler Ennis - Alex Galchenyuk - Zack Kassian
Ville Leino - Mikhail Grigorenko - Alex Bourret
Nathan Gerbe - Luke Adam - Patrick Kaleta

Robyn Regehr (A) - Tyler Myers (A)
Andrej Sekera - Christian Ehrhoff (A)
Brayden McNabb - Mark Pysyk

Ryan Miller
Jhonas Enroth

Needless to say, I fixed the Center depth after acquiring top picks in the 2012 draft, and also the 2013 draft to get MacKinnon.
Funky Monk for GM of the Year award?

How do you like mine, although it's after two Stanley Cups

Vanek-RNH-Pominville
Leino-Ennis-Stafford
Gerbe-Colborne-Kassian
MFoligno-Anisimov-McCormick

Regehr-Chara
Myers-Ehrhoff
Sekera-Boychuck (the Bruin one)

Dubnyk (Had to trade Miller for RNH and Devan)
Some random sucky backup.

Needless to say, the defence is rock solid

In the middle of my second season. I play on the superstar difficulty, and during the first year, after a hot start, I got on a horrible losing streak and missed the playoffs, finishing in the 9th seed following a loss to the Bruins on the final game of the season (lost 1-0, they scored with nine seconds left).

I'm fairly certain the game has some kind of momentum system in place. I have NEVER gotten on such an awful losing streak in my history of playing.

Nevertheless, I flipped Hecht for a pick at the start of that year. Midseason, I moved Boyes for Matt Green from LA and I aquired Blair Betts to center my 3rd line. I was icing:

Vanek-Roy-Pominville
Ennis-Gaustad-Stafford
Leino-Betts-Gerbe
McCormick-Adam-Kaleta

Myers-Green
Regehr-Ehrhoff
Weber-Sekera

Miller
Enroth

Myers and Green both sustained season-ending injuries with about two months to go in the season.

The offseason came, and I made the plan to get tougher. My team toughness was lacking. My first move was demoting Adam to the minors. He sucks in the game. I moved Kaleta, let Betts walk as a UFA, then the fun began.

At the draft, I got a call from the Rangers. They offered up Callahan and Boyle for Pominville. Yes please. Then I flipped Roy and a pick for Getzlaf. EASY stuff.

I currently am icing:

Vanek-Getzlaf-Callahan (beast first line)
Leino-Ennis-Stafford
Gerbe-Boyle-Kassian
McCormick-Gaustad-Tropp

With the same 'd' and goalies. I'm first in the league. Everyone's producing at a realistic pace except for Boyle, who's exceeding what I expected from him and has put up 17 goals and 21 assists in less than 50 games so far.

I've hit a little cold streak again though.

By the way, the drafting/scouting system in the game is terrible and the fact that you still can't sign impending FA's to new contracts mid-season is dumb. Be a GM needs a serious overhaul.

Here's a question -

Why do players barely improve on a year to year basis? None of my players/prospects improved in overall rating following the first season in the game, including Foligno, Tropp, Adam, Kassian, Myers and McNabb.

I currently have Kassian on the team as a 76 overall. Same with Adam. I have Tropp, a 73 (or 74, can't remember) on the team just because I like him and he barely plays (4th liner). Not because he has a good overall.

When do you start to see progress in individual players?

Firstly during many sims Tropp has never excelled 74 overall which is stupid. Kassian and Adam can develop well or very little.

Secondly, players only ever go up in overall after the season is finished which is also stupid because players actually get better during the season too ea! Depending on your Assistant rating your players can also gain potential.

The players gain more xp based on where they are playing.

The drafts and contracts are bad.

Oh and sometimes the computer will do something stupid if your not watching Roch like take a good rook out for Mike Ryan. You should be able to set if you want them to develop players or aim to win with vet presence.

Vanek - Getzlaf - Pominville
Gerbe - M. Koivu - P. Kane
Armia - S. Koivu - Kassian
Kaleta - Adam - Tropp

Myers - Regehr
Ehrhoff - Leopold
Rundblad - Sekera

Miller
Enroth

In the system after one draft I have Yakupov, Galchenyuk, and RNH.

That lineup has a lot of hitting ability, but I get called for boarding or hitting from behind twice a game.

Also, all it took to get Mikko Koivu was to trade Roy and a no name fake prospect to Detroit for Zetterberg, then to flip him straight up to Minnesota. Get on that Darcy.

I just started a Sabres Be a GM mode, I started one when I got NHL12 in september with Minnesota (I got bored playing in the East all the time). I play Be a GM on the highest difficulty, because I absolutely hate it when the CPU accepts stupid trade offers. Prospects in the CHL/Europe have so little trade value, it's pretty easy to get them, that's why I don't trade for prospects, unless they made it to the NHL/AHL. I just made one trade this season so far, sending Leino and Boyes to Pittsburgh for Jordan Staal. (I think that's a borderline trade, I want to keep my trades realistic). I tried to trade away Sekera, Morrisonn and Leopold, but wasn't able to get a good deal done.

Anybody else not really like Be a GM mode in this year's edition of the game?

I feel like the prospects are poorly rated, with guys like Nail and Mackinnon being B- or C potential, and lots of other guys (Ryan Murphy, Galenychuck).

I've still never even seen an A- or A player, and anything above a B- is crazy. THat's pretty stupid considering a C player or below is pretty much career AHL fodder at best.

Also, nobody good ever becomes UFA. At least not under the age of 32. RFA's on the other hand are way too each to poach, so easy that it's hard not to give away all your draft picks and just pick them up.

I think it's taken a step backwards.

I did the trick in 11 to get first overall every year, and when I drafted a "generational" player he was 86 B at 18. Not exactly what I was expecting :/.

Is there no generational talent anymore in NHL 12? I haven't seen not one after 3 years of drafting.

I win?...

In all seriousness though, this thread has gotten me back into that game, starting a new Be a GM in which I won't have the two greatest players of all time on my team.

I did make unrealistic trades, but i also have very little draft picks after the 1st year. So yes.+ Kotalik, Zagrapan and Morrisson have way too much value.

Just won my first cup with the Sabres in '12.

Vanek - Malkin - Poms
Leino - Roy - Stafford
Gerbe - Gaustad - Kaleta
Beach - McCormick - Adam
(got RNH mid-season, but he was still in the juniors then)

Myers - Regehr
Ehrhoff -Sekera
Weber - Butler
Yannick Weber

Miller/Enorth

I basically sold the house for Malkin. RNH came surprisingly cheap. and Butler? well Chris Butler I think has a higher rating than he should in this game, and it only cost me Kotalik + Zagrapan (yeah, I know a really unrealistic trade)

Just started year 1, don't have updated rosters though so my team's a bit different than the normal sabres.

Flipped boyes+a 2nd for mikael granlund. is he in juniors right now or something? he hasn't shown up on my nhl/ahl roster, so i'm hoping it's not a game glitch.
traded morrisonn for a 3rd or 4th.
traded kotalik for a 3rd.
traded goose for kyle chipchura and a 3rd.

so my lines are currently
Vanek-Roy-Pominville
Ennis-Leino-Staff
Gerbe-Hecht-Grier
Adam-Chipchura-Kaleta

He actually plays in the Finnish league like Armia so all you need to do is offer him a NHL contract. He will accept Straight away as long as you don't have the max of 50 people signed to contracts. He will be scratched on your NHL team so then either keep him there or AHL him.

So a player gets some serious XP after a game...how does that correlate to overall?

Also, upgrading my asst coach will help overalls?

Like I said, I've played this game for years. I just never get deep enough into one franchise to care about what their overalls become. I get bored usually after half a season/1 full season and start over.

The more XP the gain in the season the Better they level. They will earn more xp based on the Potential and are more likely to get more xp playing more minutes.

Yep, assistant Coach upgrades Player growth support, Information on in game injuries and Feedback on the prospects game.

I also get bored and start again quickly. I Simulate the season and rather than playing games be the "GM" and deal with trades and stuff.

Got it. Goose currently leads my team in available XP at the all-star game with 903. However, because his potential is so low, he won't improve much I imagine?
