i hate losing Ashton, but I am happy to get Aulie.
Exactly how I feel. I love Ashton, but Aulie is a great pick up too. Seems like a pretty even trade.

More like Ryan Malone. They are alike in so many ways.

HF Boards hates me. Kicked me out right when the Gilroy/Lee trade went down and just now let me back in.

All together I like todays moves. Hopefully our D got a lot better. I know it got younger (not really counting Commodore, he's filler)and much bigger.
Still don't like losing Ashton, but much more difficult to get and develop good dmen than forwards, so I can deal with it.

You guys will love Aulie. Big shutdown defenceman with loads of character. Might make a few frustrating plays from time to time, but will probably be a rock in a new system like Tampa's.

Brian Lee
Good: mobile, smart, good positioning, good outlet pass and becoming a solid take out guy (physical seems like too strong a word).

Bad: weak shot, best skills are average, not always assertive/inconsistent execution.

I'd say that Lee struggled with 2-3 main things here:
- he apparently pouted in the AHL
- he seemed to struggle with confidence/assertiveness. His positioning was always pretty good, but he wouldn't take the body. He'd have an open lane, but wouldn't skate with the puck. He had the skill to make a stretch pass, but would make a short/safe pass instead.
- he was a notoriously slow starter, possibly due to lacking confidence and needing to be pushed to expand his game. So he'd come up late in the season, fans would pencil him into the lineup next season... he stink up training camp and get sent down until mid-season. Repeat.

He wasn't a wild horse that they needed to tame, more like a smart wallflower that they had to push into action.

Thing I like the most is we added some real physicality on our blueline. Commodore and Aulie are both crease clear-ers. Which is something we desperately were missing with Ohlund out.

I hope Barberio makes it to the team at the camp.

We don't have any puck-moving defenseman in our roster right now. Unless you count Hedman.

So would you say Yzerman was a buyer or a seller?

I am surprised Clark was not traded. Several teams interested TSN said;must have been low ball offers, and SFY said he was not giving players away.

Nice day today. Needed defense and we got it. As for Ashton it kind of sucks to lose him but if it means we get defense then it makes sense.

Buyer. He adressed our biggest need: Depth on D. We kept all our draft picks, acquired three big defensemen (i.e. added youth, mobility, size, physicality and talent) for Ashton and a pending UFA.

Ashton for Aulie: Sure, at first I was shocked when I heard Ashton was going the other way but Aulie makes so much sense. Easily a win-win trade as both teams adress their biggest needs.

Gilroy for Lee: Pretty smart move. Lee is a RFA, so we get a good chance to watch and evaluate him and if we don't like what we see we can still trade his rights after the season while Gilroy is a pending UFA and woulda been gone for nothing.

7th rounder (conditional) for Commodore: Keeps us from raiding Norfolk and hurting our prospects' chances to experience a deep playoff run.

Also, suddenly a playoff push seems still possible now.

So Lee and Commodore available for Tues vs. Habs. Aulie needs a few days to get visa squared but also will be with the big club.

Mixed feelings over the deals we made over the past week. The only reason I saw SFY trading Downie was because he was asking for too much as a RFA. Really didn't want to give up Ashton as I thought he'd be a great power forward for us starting next year, but Aulie's young and immediately improves our top 4. The Gilroy-Lee deal was probably the only clear win in my mind.

-Boucher familiarity with Aulie a big factor in trade.

-Likes potential in Lee still, believe he can do more.

-Start of a change defensively for the team overall not just for this season but the future.

-Hedman and MAB injuries were big factors in getting Commodore, will help on the PK.

-Expressed need for big body defenseman that can play. Specifically hinted at playing against Malkin types, need for D with size to play against guys like him.

-Likes Ashton, but says have a lot of forward prospects. Needed defense. Trade "like assets for like assets" instead of trading for a veteran UFA rental.

-Concussion/defenseman safety should and will be discussed at GM meetings. How to make game safer for them.

-Aulie's visa could prevent him from playing tomorrow. Expects other 2 to be in lineup though.

-No update on Hedman. Still an "upper body injury"

Tried to recap for you as I was listening. I should be a court reporter.

I love the trade for Leafs as I've been a huge fan of Ashton for a while. As other leafs fan noted, Aulie will fit boucher system so much better then Leafs. Leafs style is not meant for defensive d.

I want to see him paired with Hedman, 6'6 pairing.
