2013 Draft

If there is a lockout, how will the nhl determine the draft order?

Same as last time would seem obvious.

Bettman will personally rig the draft lottery to give the 1st pick to one of the teams most in danger of relocating.

In other words, same as last time.

Yeah, pretty much. Figure out who needs that first pick the most and find a way to rig it for them. The rest I assume will be random.

Sad that we've already started to discuss lockout drafting...

If there was a whole lockout we would get a pretty solid pick.. 5-8ish I would assume.

They were picked via a lottery weighted on the previous season. It was a forgone conclusion that Crosby was going first. Their was zero chance it was anyone else.

Im pretty sure it was an even 30 ball lottery. i remember tsn did a mock lottery leading up to it and TOR won.

It was weighted so teams that had missed the playoffs the last few years had higher chance of being selected early on.

I don't remember anything like this...but I could be wrong. I thought it was 1 in 30 chance for everyone.

So the answer to OP's question...Pittsburgh.

According to wikipedia 4 teams were given 3 balls each(PIT/NYR/CBJ/BUF), 10 teams got 2 balls each, and the remaining teams all only got 1.

No, it wasn't.

Teams that had struggled had a better chance then playoff teams, but every team had a chance at 1.

Wasn't the 2005 lottery ball picking (what ever it is called) done behind closed doors?

If the same lottery system was used, we would be one of the front runners for the 1st overall the way the New York Rangers had the same number of balls as the Penguins, because they didn't make the playoffs for 7 years in a row.

If I remember correctlythe past lockout draft went something like this. All teams started with one ball, and then depending on the amount of times you missed the playoffs in the previous 2 or 3 seasons you got extra balls. If you drafted first overall in the past few seasons you also lost a ball. With a max of 3 balls per team with all teams having at least 1 ball.

I would imagine it would be something similar the next time around. If this is the case, the Leafs would have one of the best chances to win the lottery. So ... lets hope for a lockout
