1893 Montreal AAA is proud to select HHoFer C Denis Savard.
Nice pick, Savard always seems to fall. It was getting to the point where I thought I'd have to trade up and grab Savard, just so I could laugh in all your stupid faces.

...these are the only guys I can remember from my first ATD (#8), and I'm not entirely sure about the last two.
I think ATD 7 may have been my first. I'm pretty sure Leaf Lander was here before time itself. Rumour is that they actually constructed HFBoards around him.
Indeed, I joined in ATD 9 if I'm not mistaken. Odd to think I've been in it this long. I was 16 years old then, lol.
I pmed Reds4Life. I had to take Sean Patrick to school first. I started watching in ATD #9 and you were there. Reading posts by guys like GBC, HO, and pappyline was heavenly. The legends who won before ADT #12 are my ATD HoFers, but they're all temporarily retired for this draft. My dad is from Plymouth which is right by undrafted player's home town and he started going to Red Wings games in 46. I started going to Blackhawks games in 66. Having Pilote and Savard on my team is a dream. I love hockey!

Reason: undrafted player

Thanks. You've been one of my favorite personalities (and avatars) since ADT #9. If I'm ever foolish enough to disagree with you, of course it's always meant with humor and respect.

I have a special place in my heart for Savvy...growing up in Chicago in the 80's he was my first "favorite player." So much flash and excitement when he had the puck that even a young boy could tell he was seeing something special.

It's nice having another Hawks fan here. Going from 1961 to 2010 without a Stanley Cup was a long time. Except for MJ, we don't win many championships in any sport. Cubs 1908 Champs!
Indeed. He's only a small tick behind Hawerchuk and Ratelle, in my opinion.
I would have a hard time seeing anything seperating Stastny, Hawerchuck, and Savard IMHO. Basicaly would flip a coin if I was trying to choose between those guys as 2nd line C.

They all bring pretty similar skills to the table.
All very talented players.
I was a fan of them all even when they were killing my poor 80s Leafs - they were just so fun to watch.

Stastny is definitely the most physically robust of the three, and the best defensively, as well.
Tommy Phillips was the guy I was foolishly hoping would fall to the 170 area so I could move up and grab him. Great pick chaos. TDMMs bio last year made me love him and think he was the perfect first line wing for my team this year.
By the way, I compared some of these guys against the #2 scorer in the league. All numbers are % of the #2 scorer unless indicated otherwise (see below). This is what I got.
VS 2 numbers minus outliers. If #2 is an outlier (Gretzky, Lemieux or their linemates or someone 10% better than the pack), I compare to the next highest player.
Compared to 3rd place in 1984 because Coffey was in 2nd
Compared to 3rd place in 1985 because Kurri was in 2nd
Compared to 5th place in 1986 because Gretzky, Lemieux, Coffey, and Kurri were 1-4
Compared to 3rd place in 1988 because Gretzky and Lemieux were 1-2
Compared to 5th place in 1989 because Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman and a Gretzky linemate were all more than 20% above 5th place.
Compared to 3rd place in 1991 because #2 Brett Hull was more than 10% above #3. (For Adam Oates only, I compared to #2 Brett Hull. When attempting to equalize competition by removing outliers, it seems wrong to remove Oates’ linemate)
Compared to 4th place in 1992 because 1-3 were Lemieux, Lemieux linemate, Gretzky
Compared to 3rd place in 1996 because #2 Jaromir Jagr was more than 10% above #3.
Compared to 3rd place in 2001 because #2 Joe Sakic was more than 10% above #3
Keep in mind that Stastny has one (and only one) elite season before defecting, which I would estimate as a missed 75-80% season based on his career curve. This season is not listed in the data above.

I'm assuming this 75-80% number is based off what Stastny did his rookie season. I think there's a valid argument that his actual skills/abilities were the same his rookie season as his second season, but his scoring was lower because of the adjustment to the new league, schedule, travel, etc. I remember watching a documentary about him where he said half way through the season he was completely wore down, and asked for a few days off. Anyway, if that theory holds true, Stastny would have had his "adjustment season" a year earlier and been at his second season level in 1980-81, which would give him an extra 90-95% season. Obviously this is just a theory and can't be proven, but I think it's worth considering.
