UGHHH WTF ARE YOU DOING SHERO!!!??? one of the worst moves he's made.

claiming a semi-young center with SOME offensive skill and a practically nonexistent cap hit? WE COULD BE USING THAT ROSTER SPOT FOR MACINTYRE TO SIT IN THE PRESS BOX!!!

They don't get first shot, and there's no 'offering back' like the Rule 5 draft in baseball.

What happens is should Phoenix be the only team to make a claim, they could send him directly to the AHL without exposing him to waivers again. This isn't because they get some special dispensation, its just a common sense rule to expedite the process. Because if only one team has put in a claim, its a waste of everyone's time to put the player through waivers again when everyone else has just passed on him.

Cal O'Reilly thread is on page 5, could you tell we are desperate for some sort of rumor or player movement by the GM?

I always thought that if the team that claimed him waived him, then the team that he came from has the right to be the first to claim him and put him in the minors.

Even still, I'm curious to see him play. Not expecting much, but I'm hoping for a pleasant surprise.

Me too. As stupid as it is, there is always a little excitement for me when we get a new player, even if I know they probably won't do much.

I'm just hoping they can find a way to convert him to wing if he shows he can produce. When healthy, we have a huge logjam at center (Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Jeffrey, Vitale, Park, Adams). Talent wise though, I'd assume he'd fit in between Jeffrey and Vitale in that center depth chart. If it actually pans out to anything is another story.

Some interesting quotes from Shero on O'Reilly...

http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.ht...id=DL|PIT|home

Quote:
“Cal is a very skilled player with good vision, good hockey sense,” general manager Ray Shero said. “With our situation with a couple guys out, we’ll give him an opportunity and see how he does.”
Quote:
“He had been through waivers a little while ago. We talked about it, but it wasn’t the right time or money-wise it wasn’t right,” Shero said. “Coming re-entry and with Staal and Sid being out, we liked him enough in the past to give him an opportunity.”
Then some O'Reilly quotes...

Quote:
“I haven’t played too much (wing) over my career,” O’Reilly said. “But I’m up for anything to play minutes and contribute here with a deep team like this.”
Quote:
“I played a lot with (Sullivan) last year. We played most of the first 25-30 games together,” O’Reilly said. “We had good chemistry. We both had good starts to the year and both ended up getting hurt. That was the end of that. (But until then), we had some good chemistry.”

That's a common misunderstanding that gets repeated often enough on HFB that it's kinda grown its own legs. Clefty described the way it works correctly.

What's not to like? At the very least, we just cleared 1.8 in pro-rated cap room. And could possibly bring much needed secondary scoring until we're healthy.

I like Ray Shero, alot.
He'll have a 525k caphit [50% of his $1.05m cap figure]. The minimum NHL salary for 2011-2012 is 525k. So if you're comparing him to the cheapest possible roster player it's a wash.

The actual amount of salary owed him is prorated to $184.5k [120 days in out of 185 in the season = 35.14% remaining], but that would be the same if a team called up a player from the farm on a minimum NHL salary contract.

Any word on when he might play? Next game and send McDonald now?

Wouldn't mind seeing:

Kunitz - Malkin - Neal
Dupuis - Jeffery - Kennedy
Cooke - O'Reilly - Sullivan
Park - Vitale - Adams

Based on Shero's comments about giving him a chance due to our guys out, I would expect him to play as soon as he's available. I don't see why he wouldn't be available for Saturday's game.

Where he plays will be interesting. It's a little sad how excited I am to see him play though. Our lineup needs an injection of skill so desperately that the prospect of Cal O'Reilly adding some is enticing.

Expectations should be limited, sure. But let's not forget that fans are not very good at evaluating talent or how a player will react in a new system/club. We don't even have to go very far back on the roster to see how that works out sometimes.

So, I'm cautiously interested. Although, frankly, I don't see where he'll fit in with everyone healthy, unless he'll transition to wing or we're planning on just overloading the top 6. But that's a problem to cross when we get there.

For me it's the speed issue, as it usually is. I think even a casual fan can tell if a guy is a good/fast skater or not. Being smallish (NHL wise at least) and a little slow isn't a good combo these days.

Do you know how many times I have wanted the Pens to pick up a player off waivers and there were some very talented guys that were in horrible developmental systems and they get Cal O'Reilly of all people. Even the waiver pick-ups are playing it safe...I want to see him play too though, so we'll see how he does against Boston.

I think he does...I would guess the line-up would be as follows. He had his tests today for the physical or whatever and after that he'll probably be chatting with Bylsma and skating with him to get familiar with the system, then tomorrow a full practice with the team and then the game on Saturday. That's more than enough time.

Kunitz, Malkin, Neal
Sullivan, O'Reilly, Kennedy
Cooke, Jeffrey, Dupuis - I like the look of this trio.
McDonald, Vitale, Adams

Sit Park.

If that doesn't go well, then I could see McDonald get sent back down and a line-up more like this...

Kunitz, Malkin, Neal
O'Reilly, Jeffrey, Sullivan
Dupuis, Park, Kennedy
Cooke, Vitale, Adams

Loosely translated, not quite as valuable / as much upside as Brett Sterling.
