THE RINK: Stickied Threads vs New Threads

This spot is kind of the red headed stepchild of the HF Boards empire...but I really like it.

Having read this forum for several years, it seems like a lot of this section is new players. I think that's pretty cool as there are obviously other forums who are far more comprehensive about gear, but this one seems to really have a large net to cast in terms of growing the game. Lots and lots of casual hockey fans might wander in here and get interested in playing.

With that in mind, what are your preferences in terms of having large stickied threads for major topics (i.e. buying skates, playing forward, playing goalie, buying sticks) compared to individual threads with specific questions?

For me, I barely ever read sticky threads, especially if there are a lot of them. I like to click through all the bold new threads instead.

But, if I'm looking for information, I tend to do a lot of searching and reading before asking a question. I don't know if that's common or if more people prefer to just ask it in a new thread.

For the regulars, does the current structure do anything for you or do you have any ideas that might improve the section?

I'm in here frequently as well and I would say I'm the same as you. I basically look for the bold threads and rarely read the sticky ones.

I don't know if there is an option to mention something on the main page about searching before you post if you have a question, but that would be the only thing I can think to improve it.

Although I voted for the sticky option, I do feel that the multitude of 'new' threads and somewhat repetitive questions is what makes this board unique. I would imagine a newer player/forum user would be intimidated by searching through all the older threads so would benefit from a sticky however. I'm split.

Especially with the broken search function we had forever!

I'm thinking along the lines of a "START HERE BEFORE YOU POST!" sticky that links to the best threads we've had, and then people can jump from there.

I definitely like that idea - inform them that most topics have probably been covered etc, just because alot of the stuff that gets redone just makes people have to type up everything again when we have all put the effort in older threads that have a ton of great information.

Ive been guilty of saying something along the lines of "Try searching, this topic has already been covered and other thread has alot of information"; which can come off as being an ass but obviously not intended that way.

That sounds good. People will still ignore it, but you can at least point them to one thread that you already told them to read.

keep some sticky threads, who knows how many repeat questions are avoided. love helping people but some need to do a little research first.

Some of the questions I asked on here, I tried to do a forum search on but it never worked so that's why I guess it seemed I was posting similar threads about different questions.

If you could put a section for beginners only, that could possibly help and separate the repeated questions from the main The Rink section. Also you could put a sticky of the best answers/links to a popular repeat question.

I know I'm one of the handful that seems to be posting similar threads or whatever, but I did keyword forum searches and it didn't work so that's why I just went ahead and posted it anyway.

I'm not trying to annoy anyone on this forum on purpose. Some of the answers I had to my questions were very rude and unnecessary. I'm not on here harassing anyone or breaking forum rules. It does upset me when people on here have something rude to say to someone who is simply asking a question and advice for the more advanced people on here.
But yeah I think if you put a beginners section, that would help a lot.

I hope I didn't come off like an ass, just one that comes to mind is the "what facial protection do you use" I bet that has been argued about in 10 or 15 different threads. Stuff like that.

here is an example:

Thanks for the input guys.

If you have any threads you really liked or topics that should be covered, feel free to post them here. I'm going to try this weekend and put together kind of a "greatest hits" thread so we can keep it all together and avoid as much repetition as possible.

Okay, I went full on with the unsticking of threads. Looks so clean!

Check out the big thread on top and let me know what you think.

He was a big tall guy with a good shot and liked to explain things in detail...and then we all argued with each other!

There's a link to it in The Compendium. Also, you can bump it up to the top if you'd like!

I'm trying to get the sticky threads to a minimum, otherwise you don't notice them. If they stay bumped up and lots of discussion, they'll be more active.

I get that, but that's the one thread I really liked to have stickied because whenever I planned to buy something online I used to check that thread for discounts.

I'm glad you guys addressed that! I stopped using that feature and resorted to googling "hfboards" + topic to get the page I was looking for.

Anyway, I don't care for sites that have 8 million stickied threads such that you have to scroll down to see the new ones. I think the way you grouped the goods one is an excellent alternative. Good job.

Would you guys be interested in a general off topic thread?

It seems we are getting more traffic/participation in the last week too.
