It's hard to believe with the way the Sabres have been playing lately but with today's win over the Pens they're only 7 points out.
This is just getting absurd. I know it's bad etiquette, but I'd personally be happy if someone just locked this thread now. There's no chance, none, zip, zero, nada, look towards your draft pick and hope you make some constructive moves at the trade deadline (of which there NEARLY zip chance given the man in charge).
Put it this way: we're 9 games under .500 with 23 games to go. You have to be right about at .500 to make it. That would be about 16-5-2? For 91 points? Probably need another point or two, given past results, so maybe 16-4-3, for 92 points? So the plan is for THIS team to be ahead or tied at the end of regulation in 19 of the remaining 23 games???
It aint mathematical yet, but its getting kinda metaphysical up in here.

If the unlikely happens and these guys suddenly go 16-4-3, I'm going to love it. You can be disappointed, I guess.

This is almost like when the Devils begin to get hot last year....
Still. They lost their last few games before the Penguins game, and their offense is too hot and cold to carry them. I think you still sell, no matter what. Who knows? Maybe the kids rise to the occasion and end the season on a positive note (although I'd like a high draft pick, I also prefer my teams to continue performing to 100% capability every night they're on the ice).
Anybody who is excited that the Sabre's may leap over SIX other teams to squeeeeeeeak into the playoffs must think they have a chance at winning the Cup. If you don't think that, then you obviously don't mind throwing away a potential franchise player draft pick, just to extend the season by maybe 5 or 6 games.

Crazy.
Not so. I'm not an admirer of winning by losing (e.g., Pens). I much prefer the winning (and smart asset management) breeds more winning (e.g., Detroit). Anyway, besides the Pens -- who had the once in a lifetime luck to draft Crosby AND Malkin -- that model hasn't worked so well (arguably Chicago, I guess). On the other hand, look at the Isles, Edmonton, etc. Even Washington is out of the playoff picture right now.

I think you are misinterpreting what some of us are saying.
We are saying we would rather watch our Sabres win and give 100 % than watch them lose just to play the string out in hopes of a better lottery pick .
Stranger things have happend than the Sabres making the playoffs and possibly getting to the Cup finals.
Wasnt it 2006 when the Edmonton Oilers made the Finals against the Canes just losing 4-3 in that series and the Cup ?
No way you can't lose 4 straight in this critical time and make it. Needed both points the other night vs Montreal needed other points in the other games. Not happening. Need about 17 more wins......23 games? no way

And if the Sabres should pull this off , what would you say or do then ?
Pretty tough sched, biggest thing I'm afraid of is jumping up the standings and not making the playoffs, getting a lottery pick would change the franchise

NO NO NO!
I am learning from some here that a high draft pick is nearly meaningless. Instead, you should focus on the freak occurrence of Edmonton having a chance to lose the Cup 5 years ago. Remember: Just squeaking into the playoffs is the important thing, because every so often, a low seed just may have a chance to lose the Cup! Of course no low seed has EVER actually won one. Bad odds on top of bad odds.
Ehhhh not really sure which way to lean on this....in one hand I really have trouble rooting for the sabres to lose....on the other hand, when they do lose I'm not too bothered....I'm just hoping they don't follow the bills path and always do JUST good enough for a 12th overall pick....
Honestly it'd be much better to see the islanders go on a tear and knock toronto out of the playoffs. XD

There's a chance of failure either way you go. Additional playoff experience for the newcomers on the team would NOT be devoid of value.

Agreed !
Then Squant wants to knock my Edmonton analogy of losing in the Cup finals 4 games to 3 . Sorry Squant but I would love to watch my Sabres go to the Cup finals and have a game 7 to find a winner !
Nothing better in any sport than the intensity of playoff hockey !!!
I understand fans feeling this way but Regier/management have to be smarter. Their stupidity is killing us. We are going to win more games than we should and get a worse draft pick -- and not make the playoffs. No man's land. He could have moved Gaustad, Roy, maybe Leopold and HELPED the team tank. There would have been nothing wrong with this, players on ice would continue to play hard.
What the team is doing now is dumb, dumb, dumb. We are not making the playoffs. It is not comparable to last year.
This is so frustrating.

Contrary to popular belief, playoff hockey, is not in point of fact, any different than regular season hockey in intensity, production, compete or finish. It still boils down to execution on the ice, whether you are a rookie or 15 year veteran.
