Beer League post game handshake - is it ever ok NOT to shake a guy's hand?
I guess the only time it's okay to not shake anyone's hand is if they go all Claude Lemieux on Kris Draper style of hit
funny enough, didnt all the wings shake his hand afterwards? although ciccerelli came out after and said he wished he had'nt or something to that effect
How is not shaking someone's hand "going all neanderthal and defending your honor"? It's simply a refusal to partake in a gesture that acknowledges that the culprit's behavior was acceptable as it was simply "part of the game".
I'm sorry, I'm not a kid anymore. If you take cheap shots at me or my teammates, its not "okay". I'm not going to just let it go, shake your hand and pretend its all fine so you can come back and do it again next time.
Part of the game is about leaving it all on the ice when it's over, because it's simply that...a game.
If someone punches your wife, you settle it however you want within the confines of the game. That being said, if it's right at the end of the game and he quickly skates into the handshake line to avoid you...well, I think it's only fair that you get a chance to punch him in the chops as you skate by, never mind just avoiding his handshake. He should expect it.
I just fist bump now. I refuse to shake people's hand if they're not going to shake mine properly. Doing beer league skate by handshakes is like shaking tentacles with a bunch of dead octopus.
No, they don't make a right. Shaking hands acknowledges that his bahevior has been excused though and in some cases, it has not. Therefore, no shake.
Playing rec hockey shouldn't give you the right to act like a degenerate and as your opponent I am not required to excuse what another person does. I will be the better man by not shaking his hand and not acting like what he did was OK.
I started this post and it's interesting to see so many different views out there. I've played in the same beer league for about 10 years now and I've always participated in the post game handshake until last game when one of the other players was behaving so badly (it has happened before) that for the first time ever I skipped someone in the line. Then I started regretting it causing me to wonder if there is (as some of the posters suggest) an absolute etiquette rule that you must shake hands no matter what.
After reading all of these posts, I think I agree with this CarlWinslow post. I just could not forgive this guy's behaviour and shaking his hand would have given him the message that all is forgiven. Maybe he will get the message if he is skipped.

That's the whole problem though. The things some guys do shouldn't be a "part of the game". So why shake a guys hand and enable that type of behavior?
lol at you guys. Seriously, a "co-ed" league. I've been playing in Minnesota since I was 5 and I can't say I've ever heard of a "co-ed" league.
Every rec league is co-ed if the girl is good enough. We have a few girls on teams as high as the 6th level (out of 17), which includes some ex-D1, D3 and Junior B players, and, based on what I see in the pipeline in terms of some of the teenage girls playing around here now, I think it is only going to grow. Some of the 16 year old girls playing around here have got some serious talent.
That said, most of the adult women playing rec league are doing it in the lower divisions at the moment.
I hate the post-game handshake as much as I hate when I'm on a team that feels a a chant on 3 is important before each period and after a timeout. Let me just play and go home and I'll say good game to those that deserve it on the way to my car.
I just know I feel worse if some guy makes me so mad I refuse to shake his hand. At least with shaking his hand it's like you can clear your mind of the incident and take the high road.
Glove on though and I swear I get sick less now.

Charge our 5'3 girl with the pink gloves so she gets a separated shoulder.
Crosscheck her twice in the head while she's still on the ground.
Tell us she is a "diver"
Challenge all of us on the bench to a fight.
Then run back to your bench after your penalty and skip all your shifts until the handshake line.
Be allowed to do this **** because every time you take a penalty, your ringer goes out and scores 2-3 shorties.
Continue to average more penalty minutes PER GAME than you do points PER SEASON...
You're kinda a ****** and the type of guy who I wouldn't even trust to shake my hand. That's the only time I haven't and he was running around the rink shouting to the refs "TWO OF THEM DIDN'T SHAKE MY HAND!!!" like he wanted a penalty or something.
Good call on the glove on, I don't want to touch other dudes' hands.
I learned after about two games to never shake hands without my gloves on. I had a brand new pair of gloves and after the handshake line my hand smelled like dog-****.

Simple solution: take it out on the ringer. And then tell him to his face that it's because his teammate hit a girl.
fist bump with gloves down the line is the standard throughout our league. I don't think anybody goes bare hand.
And for whoever mentioned the zamboni factor, it's an extra 45-90 seconds for everybody to meet up and skate the line. I'm sure the zamboni driver won't mind.

Chances are incredibly slim that I'm going to catch something from someone that's not crawling on my own equipment if it hasn't been cleaned before the game (and it rarely is cleaned and sanitized properly).

I can't speak for anyone else, but I sanitize my glove, blocker and c/a after every time I play.
Besides, my own germs won't get me sick, but someone else's will.

I agree. And I do sanitize my gear often. I'd rather shake someone's sweaty hand than touch their hockey glove.
The norm where I play is to take off your gloves, luckily. If someone leaves their glove on for whatever reason, I'll bump it with my elbow rather than touch it with my bare hand.
As a goalie, theres only been two instances thaty cause me not to shake hands. When its a blowout game and guys are still cherry picking on you.
Or if a guy puposely runs you.
Thats about it.
That having been said, I really don't liek the handshake overall. In palyoff games sure. When a team gets eliminated thats cool. but every single game?
